CBS' new Nancy Drew will look very different should the network move forward with the reboot.
CBS Entertainment president Glenn Geller revealed Tuesday that the network's reimagining of the iconic character will be diverse.
"She is diverse, that is the way she is written," the executive told THR immediately following his time in front of the press at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour Tuesday. While Geller said it was too early in the process to explain just what he meant by diverse - whether Nancy is African-American, Asian-American or Latino, he said it would hinge on finding the right actress for the part. "[She will[ not [be] Caucasian," he stressed. "I'd be open to any ethnicity."(snip)
The news comes a day after Netflix announced it was teaming with Norman Lear for an all-Latino remake of his classic sitcom One Day at a Time, as networks make diversity a priority in a bid to attract new underrepresented communities and better reflect society.
During his time in front of the press Tuesday, Geller stressed that diversity is playing a major role in his development season. "We have a lot of new series in development, both series targeted to have full African-American or Latino casts but also many leads that are being developed [as diverse]. We're not casting color blind, we're casting color conscious," he said.

We will get two diaper heads as ‘The Hardy Boys’ next.
"I'm getting a raging clue right now!"
Dude!
That’s...like...HAWT!
If I win the lotto tomorrow, I might start the 'White Entertainment Television', but it might be racist...
Oh by the way, The blacks are like a typical 60s tv family...the Caucasian family is divorced.
Remake of 'Leave It To Beaver' (Mexican family) and 'My Three Sons (Gay dads).
Actually that's how it started before it was minoritised
I take this to mean they are directing a TV show at an illiterate population (that would never read a book series). How many minorities read the “Harry Potter” series?
Who cares? I won’t be watching either way.
Hear about the new “Song of the South” movie with a white man playing Uncle Remus? I didn’t think so.
Excellent point!
This show will sink like a stone.
But when it does, I bet it doesn't hurt Mr. Geller's career at all. Because "he tried."
The show might do OK (because it ISN’T reading); they’ll probably have to push the envelope to garner some hype, but it might work. Girls dressed like sluts, no big words - tailor-made for a young American audience...though it will bear no resemblance to the book series.
LOL
And the thing is, here’s an idea for them: Instead of constantly remaking old ideas (and ruining them for those of us who loved the originals), how about they try coming up with new ideas? Create some new character but DON’T make the main, most interesting part of them their ethnicity.
But that would require an imagination and creativity, and these guys in TV and movie possess neither of those, evidenced by everything is a remake these days.
Good point about the most interesting part of them being their ethnicity.
A few years ago, I knew a writer who was writing a script. Her main character was an interesting, mysterious, imperfect white man. There was also a black character in the script, but he was a minor character. This writer got word that a black celebrity might be interested in producing her script, but only if a black character was the lead. (Very racist of him, of course...imagine if a white celebrity did that...but anyway...) The writer started revising her script, making the black character the lead. And of course, she knew this black celebrity would only want want a positive black character, not a “stereotype” or negative character. So she made the black character perfect! He was kind and brilliant and heroic, a great husband and father, noble, competent, etc., etc. In other words, BORING. I don’t think she even fully realized what she was doing, or why.
Perfect characters aren’t interesting. They have no mystery and you always know what they’re going to do. She completely ruined her script.
My point is, if “Nancy Drew” or whatever white character is turned into a nonwhite, they will have to be absolutely perfect. Otherwise, there’ll be screams of “negative stereotyping!” or whatever. Any villains or negative characters will have to be played by white actors. It will be the same-old, same-old, it’ll be no good, and it’ll flop.
But they never learn...
Exactly, Nea Wood! I’m also a writer (though I write books, not TV or movie scripts), and you’re absolutely right—perfect characters are not interesting. Note that most of the characters that are memorable are usually flawed in some way, who have layers to them that aren’t always stainless. Your poor friend was so focused on pleasing that racist performer that she probably ruined what could have been some of her best work. Very sorry to hear that, and that’s the crux of the matter right there, that liberals approach creative works as a platform for their mindless agendas, rather than as forms of art to entertain and share with others.
I’d love to check out your books! Can you tell me the titles? Private message me if you’d rather be incognito on Free Republic. I can tell you’re a good writer!
