David Bowie and Freddie Mercury a capella version of "Under Pressure." Must listen!

"One day in 1981 Bowie reunited with Queen in a recording studio in Switzerland, with the intention of doing vocals for the song “Cool Cat” . David got bored and suggested writing a new song from scratch. According to Mark Blake, author of a biography of Freddie Mercury, they began a 24 hours marathon of wine and cocaine and ended up with this musical gem. This is incredible! Back in the day when auto-tune wasn’t needed. You’d never hear this from most ‘singers’ these days."

I'm a Freddie Mercury fan and not so much about Bowie, but this shows their incredible musical creativity together.

So sorry about the yucky symbols. I copied and pasted it into Word first. I don’t know how that would have helped.

Anyway, I don’t think singers do this kind of riffing anymore. Do they?

And it ultimately led to the career of one Vanilla Ice.

You’re joking, right?

Never heard that before, nice. In 1977, Bowie teamed up with Bing Crosby on a Christmas special for a few songs, Little Drummer Boy was done very well. I remember watching it back then.

I think it’s incredible how perfectly they establish the melody of the song with only their voices. Their voices are the only instruments.

Magnificent, and very illustrative of why music back then is infinitely better than whatever it is that is done today.

Talented and tragic. We would never have been drinking buddies but I admire their talent.

My wife is one of Bowie’s biggest fans in Germany and took his unexpected passing very hard.

Every time I tried to talk to her early yesterday she would burst out crying.

I’d enter the room and say: It is a good thing that Davide Bowie died...

Then she would start crying not allowing me to finish...

because he was very ill from six recent heart attacks and now his God given life is complete.

After a few times I just stopped trying.

I have to give you a kiss. That was one of the best things I’ve ever heard.

I revere both of those voices. Unbelievable. I didn’t just get goosebumps, my arm hairs all just fell OFF.

OT from David Bowie, but...
If you like a capella, check out Bobby McFerrin.

The problem with a lot of these “superstar” duets is that the songs just aren’t very good.

The music in “Under Pressure” is uninteresting and formulaic. The lyrics are something Barry Manilow might have come up with on a bad hair day.

Think of the other duets: “Ebony and Ivory”, “State of Shock”, “The Girl is Mine”. Heck, the best of the lot might be “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” (Elton John/Kiki Dee) and Kiki wasn’t a superstar. Yes, it’s kitsch, but it is a well executed pop ditty with no pretensions of being more.

“Under Pressure” had those pretensions.

God given

David had a God knowingness about him, along with everything else he knew about me, to be that complete package.

Tell you wife I cried my eyes out and will miss him very much.

I never cry for celebrities ever but this person was much, much more. Yay David Jones Bowie lived and we as a world are much richer for it.

It would have been better with just David singing it, Freddie's vocals I found annoying.

You're entitled to your opinion.

However, you'd be better served by admiring this piece of art for what it is: original, melodic and catchy.

I agree with you on your assessment of the other 3, though. Worse than that, though, was the duet of Natalie Cole with her deceased father. That was kitschy, exploitive and stupidly sentimental, IMHO. Uggh!
