Yes, as we've seen with other big lotto winners, "winning" brings its own set of problems.
I always get a kick out if people who, when fantasizing about winning millions, wonder how they'll deal with the onslaught of moochers coming out of the woodwork begging for a handout.
I'd deal with them in one of two ways: "No." And "Get the hell out of here before I have you arrested."
That includes relatives.

If you buy the winning Powerball ticket in Illinois, you probably won’t get the $$$

“So, I suggest buying two tickets, and driving really carefully.”
Especially when driving to claim your winnings. . .

Cash payout only $800 mil or so; after taxes probably less than half a billion. How many countries have GNPs smaller than that? Not that you’d want to live in any of them, of course!

I know - but it’s fun.
I played lottery for first time last yr - one ticket, one time - and lost.
Last week I played for second time. Two tickets for powerball and lost. Two NC scratch offs, I won a dollar.
I feel silly but it is exciting.

Yes, that all is of interest to me too.
I like breaking out numbers and looking at what they reveal.

There were lots of winners, unfortunately most of those winners were not those of us the spent money on tickets. Retailers get commissions for selling tickets and the rest goes to the state or federal government for them to waste.

I’d settle for half a billion. What is the top scale of capital gains these days. I think you’d wind up with at least half, and perhaps as much as 67% or so.
I thought the ceiling on capital gains was around 32%, but not being involved with that issue myself, I could be way off.

Great. It’s a blast.
You know what, how many times have you read of one guy going in and buying one ticket and winning?
That guy could be you. Best of luck.
Enjoy.

They do spread the money round a bit, but that was the purpose, to raise money for government.
People don’t have to play.
