if you have to poop and pee in an outhouse in the middle of winter, why live?....
seriously, I think a more reasonable "off the grid" to me is being out of the rat race...
living simply so you don't have tons of monthly bills.
learn to have fun doing simple things like cards, or puzzles, or reading or playing musical instruments, etc...
learn to grow a garden, maybe raise a few chickens or a beef cow....
get you bills under control....better to cancel cable, and the newspaper and have just one car then to be swimming in bills...
be happy....that'll get to the elites more than anything...
Most people are better off buying a tiny house and living car free.
If you want to eliminate stress and a debt its a manageable way to live without going off the grid.
The middle ground works well for most people who want a simpler lifestyle.
I grew up with an outhouse. We had enamel pee pots for the
night time. Emptied them in the morning into the outhouse.
Going potty wasn’t thought much about. Just in and out in
a flash. Wiped with Sears & Roebuck catalog pages!
And I TOTALLY agree with that. Live inconspicuously is my goal. Live quietly, mind your own business, be friendly when you do encounter others but don’t mix and mingle to excess. Keep to your own counsel but keep a few like-minded close friends. Every one else is just an acquaintance.
We keep to ourselves out on our hill for days at a time. We live modestly and have lots of hobbies that keep us very busy. We spend lots of time cleaning and keeping things tidy and we do it together and pray we can live this way for the rest of our years. I have the luxury of spending hours just servicing the tractor if I want to or sharpening tools or crafting something for someone. Even mowing is a pleasure when done without having to go or do something else.
It is when I go to town and try to get others to do things or depend on people I don’t know for things that I get frustrated and angry. We can only do a limited number of things without others so we keep to those things we can do ourselves for the most part. When we do need help or services we stick to the same pathways and people we know to be reliable and don’t branch out from that very much at all.
That is why they invented the two seater. So no one has to die alone.
Even though newspapers are dying there are still those want ad prints like the Thrifty Knickel outside gas stations you steal in bundles for firestarter or outhouse conversations:
"Did you see this ad?"
"Yeah, it wiped me out!"
Better yet, look for good older used cars.
We have a small herd, and usually most are running, if not all.
Insurance is cheap, parts are cheap, and if you are a little bit handy and have old enough vehicles, you can fix them yourself.
Some jurisdictions have such intensive emissions checks that may not be practical, but in others you can do very well.
That's why they have chamber pots....
Slogging through a blizzard to feed the cow isn’t all that much fun either. Keep the outhouse seat near the fire. Get one filled with fluid that stays warm for a time makes it a better experience.
Well said.
I lived a couple of years with just an outhouse for pooping when I had the cabin. Peeing is actually easier in the woods. Admittedly I had electricity and had a well tho' so I could bathe whether I needed it or not.
Seriously? If deprived an indoor privy you would die?
Sad.

I hope you are not serious. My grandparents never had an indoor bathroom down on their farm. I loved visiting them. The chamber pot came in handy in the winter.
These days, it is easy to have modern plumbing out in the booties. In fact we live less than a mile out of town, and have our own sewer disposal system and water from a well.
But even if we lived further out, we could have the modern conveniences-it is simply a matter of setting everything up.
