HEMPSTEAD, Tex. The state trooper who arrested Sandra Bland, the Chicago-area woman who three days later was found hanged in her cell at the Waller County jail, has been indicted on a perjury charge, a special prosecutor said here Wednesday.
The charge against the Texas state trooper, Brian T. Encinia, is a Class A misdemeanor, and was announced at the end of a day of grand jury deliberations. The charge carries a possible penalty of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine, prosecutors said.
The charge stemmed from a one-page affidavit that Trooper Encinia filed with jail officials justifying the arrest of Ms. Bland, who was pulled over in a routine traffic stop in Prairie View, northwest of Houston, for failing to use her turn signal. Ms. Bland, 28, who was black, was returning to Texas in July to take a job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M.
The trooper wrote that he removed Ms. Bland from her car in order to conduct a safe traffic investigation, but “the grand jury found that statement to be false,†a special prosecutor, Shawn McDonald, said.

She was actually pulled over for failing to signal a lane change, from left to right lane as he approached her from behind without his lights on.
Later reports say that the DPS Trooper was fired today as well.

Whatever! I mean the cops in our little town routinely weave through traffic on our local streets changing lanes w/o signally. I have never heard of a one of them being arrested for that act, let alone being jailed and dying while there!
She wasn’t murdered while in jail, she hanged herself. She did it after her family did not post bail so she could get out. Who is to blame?
What a mouthy confrontational biotch!! She deserved some jail time.

Don’t you think it’s the PD’s job to make sure that that didn’t happen? It’s a sensless and needless death and the PD is complicit! You don’t jail someone for an illegal lane change, and it’s clear that the cop baited her to provoke her, then he arrested her! I hope he goes to jail for his actions.
She was in jail for being argumentative with an officer. She is dead because she killed herself and you want to blame someone else.
She was that, in spades.
