Windows 10 has been installed on over 200 million devices since its launch, making it the fastest growing version of the operating system, according to Microsoft.
This adoption rate has outpaced Windows 7 by almost 140 percent and Windows 8 by 400 percent, wrote Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Windows and devices. Black Friday also helped significantly in boosting the user numbers for Windows 10. Demand has been high for the enterprise and education versions too, added Mehdi.
The high number of active Windows 10 devices is something Microsoft will be pleased with but the new OS still remains under 10 percent when it comes to desktop market share. However it's still early days and upgrading continues to be free for users.
"One of the ways we measure our progress with Windows 10 is looking at how people are using Windows," said Mehdi. "Recently we reached another milestone -- people have spent over 11 billion hours on Windows 10 in December alone, spending more time on Windows than ever before."
Microsoft has also provided a breakdown of some of the user stats for Windows 10. It claims that more than 44.5 billion minutes have been spent in Microsoft Edge, the web browser that replaced the beleaguered Internet Explorer; more than 2.5 billion questions have been asked of Cortana since the OS's launch; and finally, Bing search queries have seen a 30-percent increase.
Gaming has been popular in the new OS too, and the Windows Store has also seen an increase in activity, said Mehdi. Microsoft has stated in the past that its goal is to reach one billion devices over the next two to three years.

Using product fix updates to deliver other products is slimy.

“Itâs probably over 90% if you count machines bought with Win10 pre-installed.”
Seriously just stop.
“Extremely few organizations have adopted 10 since going to 7.”
So?
Most of those people don’t upgrade at the start, and they NEVER HAVE.
“Little old ladies who had 7 and 8 are nearly at 100% adoption rate, because of the nagware nature of 10.
âSHOULD I PRESS THIS BUTTON WITH THE SQUAHRZ ALL OVER IT, MR. OLDFATMAN?â”
And if you actually ever installed it you would know that little old ladies can’t just click their way through it.
“But yeah, youâre going to find probably less than 10% of Win10 users installed it purposefully. And Iâm being generous.”
No....just extremely stupid. I can’t even be polite and say ignorant, because what you said there is so flat-out dumb that it is astonishing.
Windows 3.1,,,,,,,,,,,,, Windows 98,,,,,,,,,,,,, and lastly Windows XP Pro. Don’t understand why I have to throw away all that I know about my computers. And being on the periphery of a product I continually read/hear about this and that don’t work anymore. Keep waiting for patches that fix this and that.
And I think there was something before 3.1 :<)))))
Hmmmm and I wrote a pretty complete payroll system on a Tandy LT1400. Can’t remember but it was probably DOS. Back in the late 80s.
I got a new laptop for Christmas. Tried it out and it kept kicking me off and not allowing me to go to my websites. At the moment I am still using my old computer; but, what good is having a new computer with Windows 10, if I can’t do the most simple thing, like getting into a web site? I’m pretty sure we are sending the computer back.
“Windows 3.1,,,,,,,,,,,,, Windows 98,,,,,,,,,,,,, and lastly Windows XP Pro. Donât understand why I have to throw away all that I know about my computers.”
I’m sorry....but why do you think computing technology was supposed to stay fixed at 1989 again?
It is not a bad OS it is the lack of privacy that concerns me. Microsoft has already “accidentally” turned back on after a windows update the settings you turned off. I hope someone creates a program that can strip out the settings altogether.
“I installed it, played with it for a day and then uninstalled it.”
Same here. Posting from Linux Mint 17.3
I use MakeMKV and Handbrake to rip my Blu-ray disks to MP4 video files and archive them on a USB hard drive attached to my Linksys router. Then I can watch them on any TV in the house.
I’ll check that out, thanks.
It’s just been frustrating to not be able to kick back and watch something not on Netflix heh.
y u mad brah?
Calling me hateful names and stuff, just because I said something you didn’t like about an OS?
I was a PC tech since the Windows 95 days, and I’m a mainframe programmer. I’m running Win10 on 2 machines at home. I did tech work on the side while working as a part-time tech for an organization for the past 6 years.
What do you do for a living?
Are you some sort of unemployed fanboy who erroneously thinks he’s going to “convert” people to Windows by being obnoxious? Or do you actually collect a paycheck in computers somehow?
If the latter, your people skills need work, buddy. They probably keep you in a windowless backroom dungeon so you don’t accidentally rub shoulders with somebody whom you disagree, thereby sparking coworker lawsuits galore.
Your anger issues are so bad, you didn’t even notice I wrote nothing derogatory about Win10 itself, just how Microsoft chose to distribute it.
“I was a PC tech since the Windows 95 days, and Iâm a mainframe programmer. Iâm running Win10 on 2 machines at home. I did tech work on the side while working as a part-time tech for an organization for the past 6 years.”
And you wrote one of the stupidest posts I’ve ever read on this subject.
Frankly I don’t know how the tech world keeps breeding this level of uneducated people that repeats nonsense like what you posted.
“duuuur, windows 10 was forced on peoples computers”
And you seriously, as someone that supposedly has real world experience with computers, sat there, typed that out, read it over, and actually thought that made sense? Seriously? That old ladies magically pushed buttons and installed a full OS?
Spare me the wall of text because it doesn’t make what you posted any more sane.
I have windows 10.It works ok. But what really made my computer worth using is 75k speed from incompetent comcast who still can’t get my bill right after three months. We desperately need some competition down here and I don’t mean att which is even worse.
Why do some of these blogs run so slow?
“Frankly I donât know how the tech world keeps breeding this level of uneducated people that repeats nonsense like what you posted.”
Uneomployed, I see.
Get a job, deadbeat.
W10 offered two choices: "Install" or "install later". I clicked "later", which started the installation. :-/
It's OK, but I really liked my W7.
“Uneomployed, I see.
Get a job, deadbeat.”
Lol! That is your assumption?
I’m actually in the middle of work right now, and decided to check FR before I plough through another boring database.
And I’m still wondering how you ever worked in any tech field and be that technologically illiterate.
What OS are you using? What browser are you using? Those can make a difference on speed.
LOL!
Keep beating up against those rocks.
It still doesn’t erase your embarrassingly bad original post.
“Oooooh let me shame him! That will make my argument”!
