The author of the Game of Thrones series, George RR Martin, has confirmed he missed the last deadline that would have allowed the sixth novel in his fantasy series to be published before the next TV series begins.
The failure to meet the 31 December deadline will mean the sixth season of HBO's Game of Thrones series will appear on screen before its source material.
Martin has been working closely with HBO writers and producers to help the series mirror the books, but the next season is due to start in early 2016 and Martin's sixth book, the Winds of Winter, will not be ready.
Announcing an update on the progress of his book on his blog early on Saturday, Martin prefacing his announcement with the words "you won't like it". He wrote: "For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, 'I have completed and delivered The Winds of Winter' on or before the last day of 2015. But the book's not done.
"Nor is it likely to be finished tomorrow, or next week. Yes, there's a lot written. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters. But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still ... and that's if the writing goes well. (Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.)

That comes from getting older and older. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Brain cell death also accelerates. This is why a writer's most productive years generally tends to happen early in life. What Martin needs is a writing assistant so he can stop wasting energy on the little stuff.

And I do not want to have the books spoiled by the series, so I am just going not watch it until he finishes the books.
Wheel of time books by Robert Jordan had to be finished by someone else because he died before the books were done.
Although there are a few of those that never got finished.
There is a trilogy that starts with, “it all began with the aurochs”. It was really good, but the ending blew.
I do however like to read still, even after that heh.
Same here - I have never watched a show even though I frequently stay in hotels with HBO. I read really fast so I might read them all again (I have the paperbacks) before I watch it on netflix or amazon prime.
I finally lost interest in the Wheel of Time although I really enjoyed the first books. At the end it seemed like the books would have been far better had he condensed the storyline for three into one - it really started to drag for me. Great writer that seemed to get stuck.
It did drag on for some time, but I did like the end.
I recently re-read the Lord of the rings, and was impressed at the writing again.
I liked it better then his Pendragon Cycle. But then I have gone off the Arthur legend.
I’m sure Brandon Sanderson can step in and finish it for Martin. He has prior experience and is a much better writer.
Totally agree. I stopped reading them after the first few as well. The books turned into introspective political musings, with no action at all anymore. Super boring.
It's a rare book series that can go beyond 3 to 5 books and still stay interesting and maintain good quality.
I think I read 8 or 9 of them (still have them on bookshelf somewhere) before I looked at my wife and told her “that is 24 hours of my life I won’t get back.” She still laughs at me over that remark.
The three book series seem to be the best of the fantasy genre more often than not and there are some good ones out there.
