thanks I’ll check those out- with rollbackrx I can run things like those- find the culprit- do a revert which takes them off again, and fix the problem after the rollbackrx (I don’t like a lot of things installed or running in backgoround, but for diagnostics I do what I described above)

Failing power supplies can do some strange things for sure. I had that experience with the first one I lost. All sorts of chaos that seemed to point to everything but what was actually wrong.

The second one just did the traditional ‘fill the room with stench and then die.

I’m trying to figure out something where I don’t have to go begging to my brother to help with a computer problem. I was given a hard drive I’d like to use as a storage unit but the person wanted to clean it up before giving it to me. He used a program called Killdisk. Well it sure killed it. It shows up in the device directory and says it’s working but I don’t see where I can format it. Properties does not give me the option to do that.

You won’t have to do a revert. MOST of the time, Combofix will remove/delete them.

Some older BIOS’s used to have a format low-level option - go in and see - something like Storage/Hard Drive menus, then highlight.

Otherwise, go into Administrative Tools->Disk Manager and select the drive. Right-click and remove any partitions so it’s a raw disk again. Then Right-click and say to create New Basic volume. Again, for paranoia’s sake, right-click and do Quick Format. Boom - should show up available. You MIGHT have to reboot to have Windows recognize it. Windows is weird like that.

I don’t have autoupdates enabled- an I stopped the windows 10 nag update when I did the update awhile ago- they snuck in the nag screen update- had to learn how to uninstall it and hide the update from showing anymore-

Yeah - Most my boxen are Win10 now - But my main bench machine has software on it that breaks in Win10, so I am keeping it in Win7... I had updates clean off too, and that Win10 nag came back twice... Not lately though... I think that one ends KB...583 or 538, so if you have newer than that, they snuck another one past you.

Ping me back if that's true, will you?

But my bet is on a bug.

on another note, Disconnect all peripherals from the box tonight and see if it does it... no NIC, no USB anything, no printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, etc... ALL gone. Doesn't tell you anything if it does it anyway - but if it DOESN'T happen, then the src is from one of them - kick em back on in a controlled way if that's the case, to winnow out the culprit.

IF NOT, likewise inside the box tomorrow night (if you are competent) - Disconnect any internal wireless, internal USB, extra HDD etc... same process as externals. Eliminate till you are down to just HDD and PS/MB/Proc/Ram... That's about as far as you can go hardware wise.

Especially, check out the Start button and reset button... Maybe a mechanical failure beginning? You can disconnect them too.

My thinking is a soft short in something... making the machine think it's getting signal... If no joy, at least you have eliminated all of that from consideration.

You should be able to right click on it in windows explorer (or click the windows key + E to bring up your drives and choose the one you are trying to format-) and there should be a ‘format’ option In the right click menu-

Just type in ‘format blank drive’ in google- you should find some detailed isntrucitons - you may need to set the drive to some kind of partition first- can’t rmember exactly now- I’ll look it up when I get back for you

RE: Extra drive

Does file manager give it a drive letter?

I’m hoping it doesn’t have to come to that- but it likely will- process of ilimination- yuck-

I do have to mention htough that some fan keeps revving up when I’m using computer, so I think a fan may be going- I think possiblyt the vid card- maybe the PS- not sure yet- I suppose there might be a possibility that could be causing it, but I think, like you, it may more be a bug-

My Alienware machine does the same thing, running Win 8.1. It is not yet setup as my primary machine, so I keep it UNplugged. Have yet to understand why it does that, but certainly do not want it ON after I powered it OFF.

Excellent point! WOL could be the culprit.

No. I can see it in the device manager and it gives me this: ST380011 A USB device. The properties drop down says it’s working ok but no drive letter.

It doesn’t show up in WE. I went to various sites to see how to format a drive that doesn’t show up in WE. I’m running VISTA and was thinking could I find some command thing running CMD and have it go search for it?

It’s an HP. I would dump it like a cheap suit. Have worked with way too many HP machines that just fail.

Remember, the sole purpose of a Linux boot AV CD is to clean your Windows volumes—not to use Linux for anything else.
