Connor Cummings, of Rockaway, N.J., and an 18-year-old pal managed to get onto an upper floor of the landmark hotel overlooking Central Park with several pieces of camera equipment Wednesday night, despite not being guests there, police said.
They then attempted to climb scaffolding in an interior shaft leading to the roof of the 52 story luxury E. 57th St. hotel, police sources said. Cummings and his friend were nearing the roof when Cummings slipped and fell nine stories, crashing onto a 43rd floor landing, police said. He died at the scene.

Four Seasons: Drop By Anytime
You know the last thing to go through his mind?
His butt.
This kid was not the innocent victim of an unfortunate accident. He was trespassing, and had to make a real effort to get into that shaft and climb the scaffolding. I realize this is a real tragedy for his family, however, he put foolishly himself into a position that cost him his life. I just wonder if the family will now try to sue the hotel.

They say it’s not the *fall* that kills ya,it’s the sudden stop at the end.
I was a kid in 1950s NYC and one time heard of someone who was about 10 stories up, threatening to jump. From what I understand, we hadn't sunk to the level of the crowd shouting "Jump! Jump!", but all those who had cars parked in the landing area rushed over and moved them to a safer place. The Daily News tut-tutted and called them "stone-hearted".
Dunno if the guy ever did follow through.
