t was Downton Abbeyâs Christmas special and its last ever episode â a potent combination we knew would guarantee a happy ending.
In fact there were dozens of them with everyone living happily ever after, even Edith.
Writer Julian Fellowes bowed out swathing every scene with even more cascading violins than usual and enough syrupy, soapy, sentimentality to make the most devoted fan gag.

What about Mr. Carston? Did he dress up as Santa Claus and do his melting polar ice caps stick?
Is this for real? It doesn’t start here until Jan. 3.
Didn’t catch it but what about Mr. and Mrs. Bates? Did he finally get absolved of murder? Didn’t know it was playing in the Seattle area.
So Downton Abbey didn’t have a Game of Thrones ending. :-(
Yes, it just wrapped up in Great Britain. I haven’t looked for the sites, but apparently Americans, Canadians, et al. have been able to watch the show online in real time.
They both got absolved of the murder of Mr. Green (the valet who raped Anna Bates).
Well, there is a line in this story that makes me wonder. It refers to Lady Mary “marrying herself off” at the end of the last series, and the couple is pictured at Edith’s wedding . That did not happen. So, if this was a slip of the pen, or some kind of joke, it leaves one to wonder if this account is accurate, or a figment.
All of the accounts previously have stated that we will not all be happy with the ending.
Yes, it is “for real.” The final season of Downton Abbey ended in November in the United Kingdom and last night was the final Christmas show. I’ve been following the next day ‘recaps’ for the last 3 months online.
Lady Mary was married in the last regular episode, to the racing car driver.
Good to know re: Bates, I like him. The one thing I’d would have liked to see is that major who made that girl staff member pregnant and was let go because of it brought to justice of some sort.
I believe that the major got killed in WWI. The maid (Ethel?) agreed to let his parents take the boy and raise him in their world.
This Daily Mail article is a scream! Well done.
I watched a few episodes but it never grabbed me, thankfully.
Okay, I remember that part where she gave the child up. Didn’t know about the major. Poetic justice I reckon. The early series was nice but to me it later turned into a soap opera.
I think it was done by the same author that wrote about the 5th season, that even the dog was willing to be killed off to get out.
THat would be Season 6, wouldn’t it? None of Season 6 has aired here yet (except at a special showing last week in 2 locations in Milwaukee, and I think that was just the first episode.)
Well, I want to know if Robert got a new dog in Season 6.
You can catch him in the present day in "Spotless", Saturday nights, on Esquire.
