Police officer practicing 'quick draw skills' shoots gun in airport

DES MOINES, Iowa,- A Des Moines, Iowa, police officer accidentally fired his gun while practicing his quick draw skills in an airport office, a police report says.

Officer Brady Pratt, 23, was in a Des Moines International Airport office Wednesday afternoon and drew his weapon to practice "his quick draw skills" and "unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and discharged a round into the ceiling tile," the report states.

The bullet struck the ceiling, traveled through a wall and into a ceiling tile in an unoccupied adjacent hallway. No one was injured, but another police officer was present to witness the accidental shot. Pratt notified a supervisor.

"Discipline is always a possibility when [police officers] are negligent. The level will be determined by the circumstances. There will be a very thorough review," said Sgt. Paul Parizek, Des Moines Police Department spokesman.

I don't know what is more disturbing about this story but this is a biggy, "unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and discharged a round into the ceiling tile,". How long until the next story we read about this incompetent includes the line "unknowingly had his finger on the trigger and discharged a round into the witness". Or dog, or bystander, or child?

A firearms tactics instructor showed me something like that with my Mossberg one day at the range. With the pump action open; weapon laying on it's left side on the bench; with his left hand he dropped a shell into the action as his right hand gripped the pistol grip (yeah, my shotgun has one of those bad old aftermarket pistol grips and adjustable stocks, makes it an "assault" shotgun ;-) ); as the gun came up off the bench he slid his left hand forward onto the pump; as it came up to his shoulder the pump was fully forward, shell in the chamber; rotated the weapon vertical as he brought it to his shoulder and slid his left hand around to a more conventional grip on the pump; and fired; hitting his target at 10 yds.

Now, he is obviously long practiced at this, and he did it in one fast, smooth motion. It was wild just how fast he could go from a "safe" open weapon on the bench to pellets on target. I actually had him repeat it a couple of times so I could see what he did - I missed it the first time 'cause he didn't tell me what he was going to do. When you're not ready for it, it's over before you know it. I've practiced it some at the range, I'm about 1/4 his speed. But then, I have a non-firearms related job, I don't spend every day at the range...

Bob Munden. Fastest draw, probably ever. Un-freaking-believable fast.

That's for sure. I remember watching some footage of him, and thinking "Boy, those are pretty amazing doubles" (with a Colt Single Action Army, I believe).

I was wrong. They were triples: one shot with a pull of the trigger, followed almost instantaneously by two "wrist shots", one with the thumb, and then the trailing pinkie finger, I believe.

Slow motion was required to see it, of course...

A couple years ago in Portland, OR, a man was practicing holster draws and killed his girlfriends daughter. Didn’t even get jail time.

How comes the ivory handled weapon is still in his holster? Damn, draw shoot, and put it back in one move?

I had an instructor by the name of Larry Hanby. He had a business in the Bay Area and even appeared on Mythbusters because of his fast draw and accuracy in shooting a small coin from the draw.

Lends credence to the lines from Big Iron.

"Texas Red had not cleared leather fore a bullet fairly ripped and the Ranger's aim was deadly with the big iron on his hip."

And they are the only ones wo shold have guns, they are so much better than us.

My libtard relative has no problem with govt agents with guns, yet wets himself if a relative who carries is around him.

I rebuilt the local cops shooting range a few years back because one of the officers over shot the 10 foot high mound with a 9mm handgun and hit a house a mile down range. Went through a bedroom window and lodged in the interior wall.

They all denied it could have been one of theirs, but the state police (who also use that range) did ballistics in the investigation and found who fired it and that he was using some really hot reloads.

I built it up to 18 feet and lengthened it so they can now use their bigger badder toys.

I suppose Des Moines has a shopping mall, so there’s some likelihood he’ll find other employment.
