My 16 year old son just spent 3 days at Johns Hopkins hospital where he was diagnosed and began treatments for what we found out is a lifelong condition.

I’m 52 and this is honestly my first real interaction with high level medical stuff. We interacted with lots of do a and nurses. All were very good.

One that really surprised me was an informal consultation. A few hours after his procedure, I stepped into an elevator. His anasthesiologist (who I’d only met once) was in it, recognized me and introduced me to another of his doctors. She knew me and also mentioned my son by name. Obviously a small thing but somewhat meaningful.

I agree in principle. Organ transplants are true lifesavers, however, why must we donate? Why can’t we sell?

Imagine if someone dies and is lived a clean life and died quickly. They are harvested for usable parts and the family is given a check for $35000. What a great incentive to live well.

Ha! That would presume one owns their OWN body. There’s a plethora of ‘laws’ that would state otherwise.

Plus, we all know unless the govt gets a piece of the action, it’ll never come to pass.

Do you use that excuse on all your family, for all gift giving occasions? “Merry Christmas, Honey. No, I didn’t get you anything. I’m alive! That should be gift enough for you, Sucker!”

No, but as loving father and one who really doesn't need a present from my sons to show how much they love me: If I had gone through this for one of my sons I would certainly see Father's day in a different light and would simply revel in the chance to hug him and tell him I love him instead of looking for a tie or a car or some other gift. His life would be the greatest gift I could want.

I guess that's just me. Maybe you could tell us what would satisfy you in that situation?
