If the season ended now:
AFC first-round byes: (1) Patriots; (2) Bengals
AFC wild card: (6) Steelers at (3) Broncos; (5) Chiefs at (4) Texans
NFC first-round byes: (1) Panthers; (2) Cardinals
NFC wild card: (6) Vikings at (3) Packers; (5) Seahawks at (4) Redskins
We now know half of the postseason field, but plenty will be decided in the final two weeks of the season.
Despite a 3-7 conference record and a rough 40-17 loss Sunday night, the Philadelphia Eagles would win the NFC East with wins in their last two games, but a loss Saturday to the Washington Redskins would crown Washington the division champion. The New York Giants also have a chance if the Eagles win on Saturday.
The AFC has its own three-team division race in the South, where the Houston Texans took control with a win at the Indianapolis Colts. But a Texans loss would give the Colts another chance and two Texans losses could make the Jacksonville Jaguars division champs at 7-9.
Several teams clinched postseason berths Sunday. The Cincinnati Bengals got in with a win but didn't get the Pittsburgh Steelers loss they needed to win the division. That Steelers win against the Broncos also gives the Kansas City Chiefs a real shot to win the West and possibly drop Denver all the way out of the postseason.
In the NFC, the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks secured playoff berths, and the Arizona Cardinals assured Seattle of a wild-card spot by clinching the West with a win at night.
Monday's and Thursday's games have no postseason significance, as the Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are among the 14 eliminated teams. But Saturday's Redskins-Eagles game looms large.
(y=clinched division, x=clinched playoff berth, all times Eastern)

Long shot for Superbowl is AFC South v NFC East. The division winners of both will be doing good to get past the wildcard round
Lions 4-9 vs. Saints 5-8.....
NOT!
How Detroit was able to swing 2 Monday night appearances this year is beyond me.......Maybe the schedulers were promised new Fords......
Oh, I forgot, GO SAINTS!
Here’s to a cold snowy blustery day at Lambeau field against the VIKES in a Wild card. Too bad Oakland tanked yesterday.
I'm glad to see my Seahawks in playoff form after the horrible 4-5 start.
They should be tough throughout the season and into the play-offs.
I love this time of year, not only Christmas but College Bowl games and NFL football, Woo-Hoo!
Oh yeah, AND my family :-)
My Packers are in...
Cardinals suffered a huge blow last night while clinching the NFC West title. Tyrann Mathieu out with torn ACL. Not good.
The Eagles, at 6-and-8,
are STILL in control of their own destiny.
Amazing.
My Chiefs were 1 and 5 and considered out of it. Then the Royals win the World Series and suddenly the Chiefs go on a tear. Now they’re 9 and 5 with two home games against Cleveland and Oakland. If they win out, and if Denver loses to Cincinnati next Monday, then they go from 1 and 5 to division champs. What a year.
(Gotta throw it out now, might probably change next week!)
Any team from the NFC East to make it in is nothing short of a warmup for the opposition...terrible Division. None deserve to go.
Looks like my Jets are probably going to finish out of the playoffs with a 10-6 record. That’s what they get for losing to Oakland and Buffalo.
I would propose a rule.that no team can make the playoffs.with a losing record. This seems obvious to me. If a division winner is under 500 they forfeit their spot to a third wild card team.
LOL! And we got that Dallas Cowboy ginger QB!
Its all good. ;o)
Oh how I miss John Elway and TD... Go Broncos!
The Broncos became my number 4 favorite team a few years ago, because of Payton Manning. My top 3 are the Colts, Giants, then Jets, in that order. Even though I’ve lived in New York City all of my nearly 60 years, I became a Colts fan as a 13-year-old, following their victory in the ‘71 Super Bowl.
As a kid I had a plain white football helmet I used to play tackle football at the local field (only hispanic guys play soccer there now). Anyway, being a Colts fan, and not having the money to by an “official” one, I very amateurishly painted a Colts horseshoe on each side of the helmet.
I figured Denver would have this all wrapped up by now, even with Manning out.
But the last two outings just have me dumbfounded! They hold Oakland to -12 yards rushing in the first half, and lose. Then, they go out to a 27-10 lead in the first half against the Steelers and don’t score again in the second half.
What kind of pep talk are they getting at halftime? C’mon, Brock, lets pull out a win this next game!
I was a Dolphins fan until I was in Denver for military school during their 77-78 Super Bowl season. I got caught up in the “Orange Crush” hoopla and have been a big Denver fan ever since.
But don't forget the Houston sports mantra: Texans, Astros, Rockets -- they never fail to disappoint.
The Texan’s just hired somebody’s “Practice Quarterback” for our Backup to the Backup to the Backup to the Backup Quarterback.
