Chicago expands lawsuit against former red-light camera contractor

The city of Chicago on Monday expanded its lawsuit against Redflex Traffic Systems to include the former red-light camera contractor's parent company.

The amended suit was filed Monday in federal court and added Redflex Holdings Ltd. as a defendant. The city said violations of the False Claims and False Statements ordinances prompted the filing.

"In connection with each of the city contracts, the defendants filed numerous statements, under penalty of perjury, certifying, among other things, that they were not engaged in bribery of any city employees, and that they would comply with the ethics ordinance," the filing stated.

"These statements were false."

Last August, it was revealed that the city had intervened in a whistleblower lawsuit first filed in 2014 that sought more than $300 million and accused the company of the "systematic bribery" of former city worker John Bills. Mayor Rahm Emanuel ended Redflex Traffic's contract with the city in 2013.

"I want every company that does business with the city of Chicago or hopes to do business with the city of Chicago to know one thing: we will not stand idly by when taxpayers are defrauded," Emanuel said in a statement.

Karen Finley of Arizona, who led Redflex Traffic as its CEO from 2005 until February 2013, admitted to her own role in the bribery scheme Aug. 20 in federal court. She faces up to five years in prison at her sentencing hearing, which was set for Feb. 18. Bills' trial is set for January.

G who could have foreseen bribes or fraud involved in the red light and speed cameras that liberal governments in such as de Blasio’s love so much. I already got hit in the back once because I slammed on the brakes terrified of going through a yellow. And that’s about all they’re good for. How they are constitutional I have no idea

Well I suppose that's true. They won't stand *idly* by, they'll devour every crumb while demanding that taxpayers bake more cookies.

“...we will not stand idly by when taxpayers are defrauded”

This is a hilariously funny statement, considering the source.
