To my astonishment and delight, the phrase 'virtue signalling' has become part of the English language. I coined the phrase in an article here in The Spectator (18 April) in which I described the way in which many people say or write things to indicate that they are virtuous. Sometimes it is quite subtle.
By saying that they hate the Daily Mail or Ukip, they are really telling you that they are admirably non-racist, left-wing or open-minded. One of the crucial aspects of virtue signalling is that it does not require actually doing anything virtuous.

Reddit drowns in this type of thing.
By saying that they hate the Daily Mail or Ukip, they are definitely NOT saying that they are open-minded
Did you hear that program on NPR...?
Bkmrk.
The more anyone talks of their virtue, integrity, holiness or honor, the tighter I grip my wallet and more carefully I count the change or silverware.
No.
No, I had to turn the radio in my Prius off to avoid micro-aggressing the undocumented workers I was taking to the Holiday vegetarian feast at Whole Foods. One of them asked me, "Joo for Yeb, baby?" and I told him that no, it was Bernie Sanders all the way and I hope it didn't offend his superior Third-world virtue and the memory of Huey Chavez, and he said "Si, das' cool, now gimme yer wallet, vato," which I thought was a wonderful opportunity to redistribute the paycheck I got from the local co-op. Money is truthful. If a man speaks of his honor, make him pay cash.
Lol, that’s awesome!
I prefer the term: Moral preening.
First read it in First Things Journal.
It captures the attitude much better, IMHO
Thank you. What an example of moral preening!
Lazurus Long...now that is a name I have not heard in quite a while.
You’ve had quite a day. Now go up to your room and think about what you have just done.
I thought it was a humble brag and it has its moment of fame a few years back?
When someone mentions micro aggressions, offer a micro apology, perhaps even a sad song on your micro violin.
Is it a humble brag to say, “I hate the New York Post?”
What could be more admirable than to be a “progressive”....
I remember when the liberal brand was so tarnished, it was referred to as the L word. When progressive becomes equally despised, what do you think will come next? If Sanders wins over Hillary, look for socialist-American.
