Thanks for the 411. I did not know of the difference in athletic budgets and recruiting.

The front-runner took home the Heisman hardware Saturday as Alabama's Derrick Henry became the first RB to win the Heisman since 2009.

That said, the Heisman has become more of jinx than a hallmark of future greatness in the NFL. Most winners have been full blown failures.

So, let us give a cheer for the Heisman winners that did make a mark in the NFL. Here, IMHO, are the top 10 NFL players who have a Heisman:

#10 Alan Ameche - 1954 Heisman Trophy winner (University of Wisconsin–Madison) -- Best remembered for scoring the winning touchdown for the Colts on a one-yard run in overtime as the Colts beat the Giants, 23-17 in "The Greatest Game Ever Played." It was his second touchdown of the day as he also scored a TD on a 2 yard run in the second quarter. He is one of only five players named to the National Football League 1950s All-Decade Team not elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

#9 Billy Cannon - 1959 Heisman Trophy winner (LSU) -- One of only 20 players who played the entire ten years of the American Football League's existence. He is also one of 14 players to score 5+ touchdowns in one game. Cannon, at halfback, scored an 88-yard touchdown on a pass from George Blanda in the first AFL Championship game, a 24-16 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. He scored the only touchdown in the Oilers’ repeat victory over the San Diego Chargers in the second-ever AFL Championship game. Went to the Oakland Raiders in 1964. Al Davis converted him to tight end during the 1964 season and he finished his career as one of the best players of all time at that position, playing for the Raiders in Super Bowl II in 1967.

#8 Tim Brown - 1987 Heisman Trophy winner (Notre Dame) -- Brown was a member of the Oakland Raiders team that advanced to Super Bowl XXXVII, as well as a nine-time Pro Bowl selection. Brown was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015.

#7 Tony Dorsett - 1976 Heisman Trophy winner (Pittsburgh) -- Dorsett was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. He was a member of two Dallas Cowboys teams that advanced to the Super Bowl and one that won the Lombardi Trophy following the 1977 season. Dorsett is a 1994 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

#6 Earl Campbell - 1977 Heisman Trophy winner (Texas) -- Campbell was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and a three-time NFL rushing yardage leader. Campbell is a 1991 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

#5 Doak Walker - 1948 Heisman Trophy winner (SMU) -- played with the Detroit Lions for six seasons, winning 2 NFL Championships (1952, 1953). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986. The Doak Walker Award, awarded annually since 1990 to the top running back in college football, is named after him.

#4 Paul Hornung - 1956 Heisman Trophy winner (Notre Dame) -- Hornung was a member of four championship teams (1961, 1962, 1965 and 1966) in Green Bay. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time NFL Player of the Year and posted a then-NFL record 176 points during the 1960 season. Hornung is a 1986 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

#3 Barry Sanders - 1988 Heisman Trophy winner (Oklahoma State) -- Sanders was a 10-time Pro Bowl selection and a four-time NFL rushing yardage leader. He gained 2,053 yards in 1997, when he had a record 14 consecutive 100-yard games. Sanders is a 2004 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

#2 Jim Plunkett - 1970 Heisman Trophy winner (Stanford) -- He led the Raiders to two Super Bowl victories (XV and XVIII). He is the only eligible quarterback to start (and win) two Super Bowls without being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

#1 Roger Staubach - 1963 Heisman Trophy winner (Navy) -- Staubach was a six-time Pro Bowl selection. He led the Dallas Cowboys to four Super Bowls, winning Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII (earning game MVP honors in Super Bowl VI). Staubach is a 1985 inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

If you are wondering why I did not mention the 1968 Heisman Trophy winner from USC... then keep on wondering--
