The decision to bench Manziel comes just days after a video emerged that seemed to show Manziel partying and holding a bottle of alcohol during the Browns' bye week.
"Josh McCown will be the starting quarterback on Monday night against the Ravens. I informed the quarterbacks of that decision after I sat down and spoke with Johnny, Flip (John DeFilippo) and Kevin (O'Connell) after practice today," Pettine said in a statement. "Johnny will be the third quarterback. I've spoken to Ray (Farmer) and Jimmy (Haslam) to inform them of my decision, and they are in full support."
Just a week ago, Manziel was declared the starter for the remainder of the season. And in Manziel's most recent start two Sundays ago, he showed clear signs of improvement, throwing for 372 yards and completing 73 percent of his passes against the Steelers.
But during the Browns' bye week, Manziel, who spent time in rehab this offseason, was reportedly spotted at a bar, leading Pettine to say that he was disappointed in Manziel. That feeling of disappointment seems to have led to the decision to send Manziel to the bench.
"Everyone in this organization wants what is best for Johnny just like we do for every player in our locker room. I'm especially disappointed in his actions and behavior because he has been working very hard," Pettine said. "The improvements from last year to this year have been tremendous but he still has to consistently demonstrate that he has gained a good understanding of what it takes to be successful at the quarterback position on this level. It goes well beyond the field. We are going to continue to support him in every way possible, but at this point, we've decided it's best to go with Josh as the starter going forward."

He was great in college - but was already showing signs of “issues” back then - the fans didn’t want to admit it. Even after rehab he has been caught several times partying and recently was behaving badly with his girlfriend and she told the cops he had hit her and she was scared, but then immediately said she didn’t want to press charges. He is a mess.
What about Broadway Joe?
Yep there were times when Joe was “Strug-uh-ling.”
“I like my women blond and my Johnny Walker red!”

Ah, I see. Thanks!
Johnny Football literal bump....
Totally agree -
Kind of sad if you ask me. Hope he takes his life back.
...and the Ryan Leaf stupidity award goes to...’Johnny Football’!!!
Holy cow. Only 22 and may be fired from the only thing he knows. Yikes. I hope he didn’t get one of those degrees with a major that is not workable.
Can’t remember somebody getting the starting job, then getting demoted to third string, all during a bye week. It truly is Johnny’s “BYE” week. As in buh-bye. He was finally given his shot. He had a chance to prove his detractors wrong on Monday Night Football. All he had to do was skip the bars, hit the film room, and prepare. Everyone in Cleveland knew it.
When one of our beat-writers was asked about what Johhny should do during the bye week, his answer was “build an electric fence around Berea (Browns’ HQ) and lock Johnny in.”
I had high hopes. Now I’m done with him. Just hope he gets well.
No other player had the chance to take the reigns of a franchise potentially for years to come, and prove his detractors wrong on a national stage after his bye week. Any professional who has, would almost certainly spend as much time as possible preparing for such an opportunity.
Browns cant block for him. Browns cant catch. Browns have no defense.
He would just get beaten up at the Browns much like the massive Earl Campbell did attempting to save a pitiful Houston Oilers franchise.
No one on the Browns should be paid a penny above the League Minimum, and wherever J Manziel lands next cant be worse.
A lot of Heisman QB’s are a bust of late. RGIII, Tebow and Johnny Football are all disappointments.
Jameis AND Marcus are doing well and Cam is going to do what he did for Auburn this year.
WAR EAGLE!
Most these young players don’t know how to handle that much money. Too bad they can’t have the bulk of their NFL earnings go into a trust fund that has an allowance, but becomes fully available only after retirement. I’ll bet you some players would agree to such terms. I could not say how I would act with that much money either.
The only Heismann QBs to win a Super Bowl are Jim Plunkett and Roger Staubach. Newton and Palmer have a chance to do it.
Add Don Meredith to your list. Party time!
