A stab in the back? Was Russia friends with Turkey before this, or is he talking about some other back stabber?
Notice how the Obama waited to reach US soil before authorizing the shoot down.
Fore every rivet in the plane, drop a bomb on a smelly mosque.
Turkey should have lodged a diplomatic protest ... NOT shot down a USSR combat fighter aircraft ... and killed the two-man crew ... does the 2016 election get suspended over a US-USSR minor war ?
describe “minor” ...
Been saying that very thing since 9/11. For every life lost in a terror attack, bomb a mosque.
One of two things will happen:
A. The terror attacks will stop;
B. All the Muslims will eventually be dead.
Either way, problem solved.
Just more proof either Russian aircraft suck, Russian pilots suck or a combination of the two.
Or proof that the Turks sucker punched them.
I’ve wondered the exact same thing.
I know practically nothing about a modern jet fighter’s on board warning and evasion systems. But my thinking is the Russian jet should have had some system to warn the pilot and some maneuver available to avoid the missile or to let him know he was being tracked and locked on by another aircraft.
Are their aircraft that far into the dark ages, or the pilot??
Out-turning something that travels at Mach 3 or so is often very difficult.
The SU-24 first flew in 1967. Introduced in 1974. Getting a bit long in the tooth.
I think the Russian Jet was less of a fighter jet and more of a bomber against two fighter jets. I could be wrong, but I think it was two Air to Air vs one Air to Ground.
The Russian plan was basically a ground attack bomber designed in the early 1960s. It is not really designed as a air to air combat platform.
Versus an F-16 it didn’t really have much hope.
Probably has double meaning referring to Turkey and US, or more specifically Obama. Putin probably thought all involved were working together in at least a “loose” coalition to defeat ISIS. I’m sure he didn’t see Turkey to be enough of an enemy that would shoot down its jet.
The article leaves no doubt his thoughts on Turkey’s status going forward. As if we needed an article to figure that one out.
It begs the question, does Turkey think it made a big mistake? Is it going to try and find a way to undo at least some of the damage it has done with Putin. That will be challenging considering that under almost all circumstances this would be considered an act of war.
All stabs in the back are not necessarily from friends. It just means it was unexpected and sneaky. The two were not at war and whether there was or was not an airspace violation, at most it was seconds long. Turkey knew it was not a threat on their homeland. Turkey does not want Russia siding with Assad so Turkey is claiming the airspace violation in order to fight offensively while claiming a defensive position.
Either by design or accident, lucky for him he is in US.
IMHO I think Turkey acted on its own. No country would want it to be found to be complicit on this. With all the eavesdropping and hacking technology in use, if Turkey and US previously discussed this it would be found out. I don’t think even Obama would risk this.
You’re right on all points. Especially about Turkey realizing it “was not a threat on their homeland.”
If Turkey viewed Russia as a bully and decided to take a stand to get the bully to back off. Hate to tell them this, most likely this is gonna backfire majorly.
I worry that things might spin out of control over the action. Remember Iran is an ally of Russia—and they do not like the Turks.
It had to be a timed "set up" shot, with an operator looking at a radar picture with his finger on a button.
This was nothing like an incursion where an escort aircraft is sent out. There was no time.
Reminds me of an ambush or a trap, ready and waiting. Jets making many sorties probably brush that spur on normal in-out flight path routing. Probably a few times they touched it or crossed it. So the Turks (and maybe the Americans, offshore on navy ships, possibly) had the real-time radar imagery, knew the flight patterns, and set up a missile ambush.
IMHO.
If you looked at the past 2 weeks radar for that zone, I'll bet it is near a normal takeoff and landing flight path.
