Like many others here, I don't have cable. So I rely on FR for unfiltered breaking news. And there where quite a few good and informative threads last night about the Paris attacks. Thanks to all the posters for that!
Unfortunately, those threads were also peppered with distracting and silly attempts at humor. So here's my humble request. When the news is breaking - and serious - can we stay on-topic and avoid posting distractions?
I was thinking this thread should be in breaking news.
Of course not. Please don't put words in my mouth. I'm just suggesting that breaking news stories be treated as such.
Suppose, heaven forbid, there was a ongoing mass shooting near where you live. And a FReeper was posting first-hand info. on it. Would it make sense to clutter up that post with silly side comments?
And kindly see happyhomemaker's post #29.
“Many times FReepers are close by, and have first-hand knowledge. “
That has been the primary FR strength.
Sorry. I never gave the idea that people use FR as their first line of information any thought. Now that you have mentioned it, I will do so in the future. Thanks for educating me and in a gentle fashion.
"He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision" (Ps. 2:4 AV).
When Jehovah mocks His foes, wise men prostrate themselves in fear and terror.
My dear FRiend, God is using the Moslems to teach us--who have rejected Him and His preachers--a bitter lesson never to be forgotten.
Read and mull over the meaning of this Psalm, if you want to know the whole story:
"Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little" (Ps. 2:12a AV).
Well! Have They? The French army, have they repeated history, and put their arms in the air, and Declared we are the French?
You’ve already got broadband Internet access. Excellent.
Now you should buy yourself an Internet radio, and you’ll be able to listen to just about any news or news-talk radio station FOR FREE, not to mention thousands of other news and music stations from around the world — BBC, Radio France English service, Radio Australia, Fox News Radio, WOR New York, etc. etc. etc.
I bought a Grace Digital radio from Amazon. I recommend it. The model with its own speaker costs about $150.00, or the model without a speaker (but with audio output plugs for feeding into your stereo system) is about $120.00. Set-up couldn’t be easier.
Go for it!
Just curious, what does your request that Freepers respond from posting humor have to do with you not having cable?
That's a fair question. I hope you don't mind a long answer! Many FReepers are like me, they don't have cable TV (no CNN, etc.). And so we rely on this site for breaking news.
When the Paris attacks broke, there was some local TV coverage, which I can get with a digital antenna. But that coverage skipped around. Some Paris news, some local news, some regular programming.
In the past, I have found FR to be a much better resource. Breaking news is updated frequently on FR threads, and is usually unfiltered (no lib spin).
But it's tough read when those breaking posts are interspersed with jokes and silly comments. Also, consider those FReepers who might actually NEED that breaking info. An example of that might be someone who, heaven forbid, might have a relative in the area.
And let me say again, my suggestion was for breaking news threads only. Humor elsewhere is great. In fact, the humor is one of the reasons I enjoy Free Republic so much!
