Lewis Hamilton Crashed His Rare Pagani Zonda in Monaco

Three-time World Champion, and Mercedes Formula 1 ace Lewis Hamilton, was involved in what was said to be a minor crash in Monaco. The F1 superstar took to Instagram earlier this week to inform fans of what had happened, that he was ok, and fit to compete in this upcoming weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

While the F1 star came out of the wreck without injury, his custom $2.2 million Pagani Zonda 760LH did not. It’s unclear what happened to the one-of-a-kind supercar, but according to Lewis Hamilton’s Instagram, “Nobody was hurt, which is the most important thing. But the car was obviously damaged and I made very light contact with a stationary vehicle.”

The accident was said to have been immediately reported to the local authorities and occurred around 3 am in Monaco Tuesday morning. Hopefully, the one-off Zonda isn’t too badly damaged, especially considering it was one of the last Zondas with a manual transmission ever built by Pagani.

After being checked out by Mercedes’ team doctors, Hamilton was cleared to take part in the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix. Although, competing honestly doesn’t matter since Hamilton had already clinched the championship during the US Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas.

Bickering Threatens Formula One Future

http://sports.ndtv.com/formula-1/news/251833-bickering-threatens-formula-one-future

After weeks of posturing, discussions and complaints, few yet know the identity of the field next year with Red Bull boss Christian Horner claiming the sport is trapped in a battle for power and Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff saying the speculation about a new engine is “doing my head in.”

London: Formula One will head to Abu Dhabi and the final race of the 2015 season wracked by technical and political arguments that are splitting the sport. (Nico Rosberg Wins Brazilian Grand Prix)

After weeks of posturing, discussions and complaints, few yet know the identity of the field next year with Red Bull boss Christian Horner claiming the sport is trapped in a battle for power and Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff saying the speculation about a new engine is “doing my head in.”

After four successive championship winning years, Horner and his Red Bull outfit have played second fiddle to Wolff’s Mercedes team - and lost the services of four-time champion German Sebastian Vettel to Ferrari.

They are also parting company with engine suppliers Renault after an acrimonious season of disappointments, but have not yet identified where their power units will come from in 2016. (Nico Rosberg Remembers Paris With Brazil Triumph)

And while Renault delay making any decision on whether or not to continue supplying Red Bull under another identity, proposals for a newer cheaper ‘off-the-shelf’ engine for the sport’s financially-strapped teams are being activated.

Both Bernie Ecclestone, the long-serving commercial ringmaster, and Jean Todt, president of the ruling body, the International Motoring Federation (FIA), support the cost-cutting idea of a cheap customer engine.

Horner said: “I think it’s about who controls Formula One.

“At the moment, you’ve got two very powerful engine manufacturers (Ferrari and Mercedes) that are working closely together — and then you’ve got the promoter and governing body... And the engine is the catalyst of that.

“I think Jean (Todt) and Bernie (Ecclestone) are trying to get control of the sport back through the introduction of a cost-effective available engine.” (Lewis Hamilton Unhappy With Mercedes After ‘Boring’ Race)

The FIA has asked already for expressions of interest ahead of a tender for a standard engine that would be cheaper and simpler than those offered by the main manufacturers.

The engine, which has yet to be approved by the F1 Commission, would be available as an alternative to the costly 1.6 litre V6 turbo hybrids.

An FIA suggestion that costs for customer engines, as supplied by the existing suppliers, are capped at 12 million Euros was vetoed by Ferrari.

If Renault pulls out of F1, only three engine suppliers will remain - Ferrari, Honda and Mercedes - all of which have failed to reach agreement with Red Bull for next year.

This would leave Red Bull seeking a deal with Renault for a supply of unbranded engines before switching to the new cheaper supplier in 2016.

This idea of creating a new specification, with a ‘balance of performance’ concept introduced to keep a level and fair contest, has been lambasted by Wolff and others who accuse the rule-makers of ‘moving the goalposts’.

“I think many of us share the opinion that the ‘balance of performance engine’ does not work for Formula One,” he said.

“It doesn’t even work in any other category. We hear about the aggravation in GT racing and it does my head in hearing these ideas...”

“It’s like we are completely stuck, eyes closed, on what happens in other series and then somebody just pulls a rabbit out of his pocket and says, ‘why don’t we do that?’

“But I’m not surprised to hear - let’s call it ‘interesting’ - new concepts from around the corner. That happens regularly.”

He added: “It seems to me that we are going in cycles, that at certain stages we want to be road relevant and the pinnacle of technology, want to attract manufacturers...

“Once you have four manufacturers on board, as now, with the four of us, all sharing the same opinion, then you hear ‘oh, actually, we don’t want constructors in the sport - we would rather have it like GP2.”

And while the arguments continue, the popularity and the spectacle of Formula One suffer.

OK, I have my bullet and blast resistance pants on so here goes.

I think the F1 engines should be based on production engines. A race what you sell like American endurance racing. Believe it or not, NASCAR has been able to make their endurance racing very equal by using intake restrictors to equalize production based engines of all types, from American V8’s, non turbo, turbo, to European and Japanese engines. All engines are submitted to the ruling body and dyno run for approval and all competitors are monitored for unapproved power improvements throughout the year. You establish an unrealistic speed down the straights or lap times and you get a smaller restrictor.

Todays new production engines can be modified to make amazing HP and durability and I think it would make for a really entertaining series with brand support for everybody. Merced, Honda, Ferrari, Nissan, Ford, GM, everybody has an engine that could be made to compete. Say, shoot for 800hp limits and let everybody have at it.

OK, I got my vest and helmet on now. Have at it.

I think that Ilmor Engineering is helping Red Bull to use a highly modified Renault engine block next year. Red Bull has worked on software, hybrid and cylinder areas to solve problems and improve the Renault engine that they have been using. Now with all this expertise, Red Bull may just need the basic engine block to package a complete F1 power unit next year.

Since Ilmor Engineering builds a 2.2 liter for IndyCar there maybe a modified motor to address the F1 engine tender.

FIA begins tender process for standard F1 engine

Lastly we discover that the Honda F1 engine never needs to have an oil change.......................................... their engines have never gone that far! Now if Honda can just convince Charlie Whiting that to service their engine you remove the oil filler cap and install another engine!

i think the only problems with that aside from mounting points and size is they really aren't designed to be a stressed member of a chassis

if the mfg's would commit to the investment it prolly could be win on sunday sell on monday

but as long as FIA are committed to this green crap with all the ERS and batteries and such it's impossible

i absolutely hate this ruination of the sport on the alter of globull warming

but it would liven things up that's for sure

No ERS, they can cram it.

The structural objections you mention could be overcome with some chassis engineering I am sure. That was a legitimate complaint back in the small block Chevy/Buick V6 days for Indy cars.

Ford says the biggest change they made to the V6 twin turbo engine was the crankshaft for endurance racing. Heck, I know people that get 1,000 hp out of the Northstar engine for dune buggies. Buy a crate engine and run the crap out of it for a year, then get another engine and move the fuel injection and turbos over to it. No building crazy expensive engines. That pushrod Chevy engine in the Vette is what, 525hp and comes with a warranty?

Imagine, Vettle driving a Chebbie!!!!! Rosberg in Ford and Hamiliton in a VW.
