I always feel bad for telemarketers because it is such a hard job, and they're just trying to make a living. So I usually just tell them I'm not interested
But I have no pity for "Microsoft Tech Support" scam callers, and other scammers.
With those callers, I sort of do what you do -- ask them to hold for a second, but then I put the phone by my computer speaker and activate my "music on hold" icon on my desk top.
Foamy the squirrel talks to smell tech support.

I just put the receiver next to my computer speakers and play Gunnery Sgt Hartman’s speech to the new recruits (from “Full Metal Jacket”).
Oh the Tech Support calls. I HATE those. I have been in the IT biz for over 20 years so I know the difference between NAT and FAT. I hate that these people are out there scamming so I make it the least productive that I can.
I take them for the longest ride I can. I act completely stupid. I had one guy on the line for 16 minutes before I told him I didn’t know how to turn the computer on. My record is almost two hours before the guy got totally exasperated and hung up on me. I think they are under threat never to hang up on anyone. I have been transferred to their “supervisor” numerous times.

I find they say “Windows Tech Support” with no mention of Microsoft. They are my favorite because I keep them on the line for 45 minutes. What I do is tell them I don’t run windows and make up an operating system, “I run Theologic version X17” they actually support that operating system also.
