Conservatism vs Populism

Posted on 10/28/2015 7:18:06 AM PDT by jstaff

By almost any metric Ted Cruz is the most conservative candidate we have running in the primary. In 2008 and 2012 there was a large voice that said "No more RINO's", "Give me a conservative or I won't vote", and my favorite "It's not about electability, it's about principles". Millions stayed home rather than vote for the lesser of two evils, allowing a wishy-washy moderate Republican to lose to a hard core, fire breathing, far left Democrat. It was a matter of principle, they said.

I wonder what principle is at work here now, that causes so many Freepers to jump, with both feet, on the Trump bandwagon. The arguments I hear are:

-Cruz is too inexperienced, he should wait a few years. (Trump has zero experience.)

-Trump is a rich, successful businessman. (So are George Soros and Tom Steyer.)

-Trump is more electable because he appeals to both sides. (John McCain likes to reach across the aisle.)

-Trump is not afraid to tell it like it is. (Almost nothing he says is original thought, it's all been said before, many times.)

So, fellow conservatives, in the spirit of helping a senile old man to understand, I ask "why?" To keep things simple for us old people please just pick one of the choices below.

a. You changed your mind about only supporting a conservative.

b. You were joking about only supporting a conservative.

c. You think Trump is the only conservative.

d. You forgot what a conservative is.

e. You just want to stir stuff up.

I respect everyone's right to speak their mind and make their own choices based on whatever criteria they choose.

But, I just don't get this one.

F. None of the above. As there are no pure conservatives in the race, one is left to consider the most effective who will at least be able to carry out some conservative agendas, which vary in importance.

By the way, your “have you quit beating your wife yet” style of interrogatory is not only insulting, it is also feeble.

Boggles the mind to hear Cruz defined as “not conservative enough” or “ not a pure conservative”.

I didn’t suggest that you were the guy who would stay home or vote for Hillary. I’m just turning the tables on the RINOs, and smoking any of them out.

Regarding your initial question, I believe I did answer it in #7.

But now that you’ve so neatly dodged MY question, let me put it to you directly:

If Trump is the nominee, will you stay home, vote for Queen Hitlery, vote for the populist Trump or what other thing will you do?

If Clinton wins the nomination I will support the GOP candidate, whoever it is. I have never advocated for ideological purity. I will vote to defeat the leftist every time. I understand that sometimes you have to choose the lesser of two evils. If you don’t have any suggestions an answer to my original question, then I guess we are done here.

"Cruz can only appeal to southern Christians."

I'm not overly religious and have never lived anywhere outside of NY/NJ. I'm voting for Cruz enthusiastically.

As a friendly reminder, my Post #7 is my response to your original question:

“The key is to defeat Rinos. We must first defeat the close enemy before we can attack the far enemy.

Trump upsets the whole d.c. applecart. That is likely a net good.”

And shall I add the following?

"If you don’t have any suggestions an answer to my original question willingness or ability to read the answer to which I directed you, then I guess we are done here."

How's that tone working out for you?

I'll answer your question. I support Cruz, but if Trump is the nominee I'll vote for him. He will be a big government disaster, and will grow federal government and spending at an astonishing rate, but he's not a corrupt drunk incompetent monster like Hillary.

Best to avoid the horrible choice entirely by nominating a conservative.

Frankly, I think the aim is more self-gratification, with all that implies.....

I agree.

I have one more perspective you may also agree with:

Trump will be a loose cannon on deck. But the “deck” is Washington D.C.

Exactly what in Washington D.C. is so near and dear to our hearts that we are unwilling to allow it to be crushed?

:-)

Trump / populists are destroyers. But he’ll be in D.C. I can live with that.

Here’s a second perspective:

Trump is a manifestation of the revolt that will always arise when leaders disserve the people. If the Republican Party had been identifiably conservative at any time in the last 20 years, Trump could not exist. The RINOs chickens have come home to roost. Trump is THEIR FAULT.

Do you know if we ever got an answer on why he voted for the Corker amendment?

I agree, plus if the Trump era must come, it’ll make for great television.

Apologies.

I should have said “straight” answer as the statement he gave seems rather abstruse and contradictory.

The whole point of my post was to needle those Freepers who made such a big deal of staying home in 2012, because, they said, they didn’t have a conservative option. I will not call them out by name because that violates the user agreement for posting.

I am not a Trump hater. I sincerely want to know why they would abandon their positions in this primary. There is a proven conservative that they are not supporting. If Trump does not get the nomination and they choose to stay home in the general, what reason will they give this time? Are they really conservatives or just playing one the internet?

All this other stuff is chaff. Why are things going the way they are with Trump? That is all I want to know.
