The Big Broadcast is a Sunday night tradition for families throughout the WAMU listening area. Each week, Big Broadcast host Ed Walker offers listeners priceless recordings of popular radio programs from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Priceless, especially, for a man whose first sentence as a child was, 'Turn the radio on.'

Well folks, this is it; Ed's last show, prerecorded from his hospital room. Story here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3351743/posts
I started listening to Ed off and on in the 90’s. It began to be weekly around 2003 and a few years later decided to see if a thread on Free Republic would be sustained. Thank goodness for Gina who shares my love and commitment for OTR. I give this backdrop to say Ed has been a way of life. When I was on business trips I would still tune in Sunday nights wherever I was. There are countless stores of how Ed comforted people. One of the best is during a hurricane in Louisiana a man was out of power, hunkered down, worried, and was able to catch the Big Broadcast on his handheld emergency radio and find peace.
So tonight we'll hear Ed's favorite shows and get to enjoy him one last time. God Bless you Ed Walker and a lot of prayers are being sent your way. You've changed a lot of people and made the world a brighter place and for that we all love you.
So, let's celebrate Ed's accomplishments...

Week before last I heard a great “Lone Wolf” dramatization — on “Suspense”!
(From 1943. I heard it on Toronto’s AM 740.)
I didn’t know “Suspense” did that.
Warren William was Michael Lanyard, the Lone Wolf. He’s much better on radio than on the silver screen, where he’s wooden.
Eric Blore was his valet Jameson. He’s outstanding on both radio and film.

Oh yea, Suspense and many OTR programs were written on novels, real life, popular films. Various shows will do the same story in a their own way. Not sure if I've heard Lone Wolf.

Thanks so much, Vision. Just reading what you wrote in your comment made me misty-eyed. It’s true. Ed is a treasure, and we will miss him more than we can say. Sad night tonight.

My pleasure, glad you’re here and enjoy it. Anything new? I’ve been on a diet but grilled up a big flank steak yesterday.

Yep! Stiff upper lip tonight!
We’re FINALLY getting some rain. It’s been an unusually long dry stretch, so much that there’s been a statewide burn ban in effect for a couple of weeks or so.
We’re doing fine, otherwise. Glad to be here. How about you, Vision?

Just started listening, and I’m glad to know that this program will continue with no changes. Ed sounds like a much loved person, and it’s always sad to lose someone you’ve enjoyed listening to for many years.

Wait. Maybe I should say a stiff LOWER lip, since that’s the one that gets more out of shape when I start to cry. :-)

I messed up a Boston butt yesterday. I got sidetracked during the Bama game. Next thing I know the egg is at 700. Hard as I tried I couldn’t get the temp down. After about an hour I checked the Butt temp.175. Wrapped in foil and let it sit until we were ready to eat. Raw! Never had that happen before. It’s cooking oven now. Doh!
