This is a plea from those of us with limited bandwidth. This morning there was a touchdown animation that took about 2 minutes to load on my browser. It was in a thread that was completely unrelated to football or touchdowns. There are an increasing number of animated GIFs showing up that are either unrelated to the topic or superfluous.
Videos like youtube links are automatically blocked from loading until you ask to load them. Those are great and I select a few to click and load. Links to animated GIFs could be replaced with a single frame GIF of the same content although only in some cases.
Animated GIFs are downloaded whether I want them to be or not to be downloaded. Obviously a very large high res static GIF might also chew up some BW, But an animated GIF even medium or low res can have lots of frames and take lots of bandwidth to download. It can be the same (in BW terms) as loading the thread with hundreds of low-res pictures. If someone knows a way to stop those kinds of downloads in Safari, I would like to know that too.
Thanks for listening and for your consideration.
My lack of bandwidth is because I live way out in the woods and away from the putzes who are screwing up our country and civilization. I could stay in the city and try to fight them in person but I think it is better to stay away from them and prepare.
Not guilty
What a beautiful doll. Why can’t I find someone like that ? :-(
Is that girl somebody famous?
If she aint, she ouhgtta be.
Thanks for the idea. Do you know if it blocks the animated gifs above? If so can I selectively turn them on like Click-to-Flash? Does it leave regular gifs alone?
I think the source of your problem is not your IP bandwidth, but you computer/browser needs tuning. I have medium speed DSL and the gifs you complained about loaded in under 5 seconds.
That doesn't matter, everyone must yield to the complainers in today's world.
The large animated GIFs will stop trying to load. The ones that have already loaded will stay intact and will be cached for the next time. I can sort of get by with that technique especially in a thread like these that is larded up with some big ones. Lucky for me, the big ones in post 30 were able to load completely before I hit escape.
Thank goodness for high-speed internet connections.
Exactly
“BTW, a quick workaround for those of you who struggle with this issue, is to hit escape. “
I’ve tried the Escape button numerous times but I never go anywhere. I also have a “Reset” button but I’m afraid to use it because I might wind up in the same place as Hillary Clinton.
I have cellular that fades in and out. Sometimes I get good performance. But the GIFs that have not loaded like the baby in the ball are beyond my network capacity unless I hit reload, go do something else for 10 minutes and come back.
Hey look, if I hadn’t started this thread, you would not have seen post 30. So at least give me some credit for that.
4MB saved to disk, not too bad. Took about a minute to download. It’s ok, but not as good as post 30.
“You never called!
LOL
If neither of those work for you then I think you should find another option that does. Don't try to tell others how they should use this terrific site. They are sharing some pretty cool stuff that many of us are able to enjoy. I have FIOS and all my stuff loads in a blink of an eye and many others here are not bothered at all by animated gifs.
Kinda reminds me of our current education system. Let's dumb all education down so nobody is left behind even those who refuse to take part in the assigned school work.
Must have been a third-world drive by!
