'Mistakes made' by RCMP in High River gun grab: Report
Edmonton Sun ^ | February 12, 2015 | Claire Theobald

Posted on 10/24/2015 6:24:29 AM PDT by Pontiac

The report said that as RCMP officers conducted these searches, one team stumbled upon 50 firearms found in a bedroom on the second floor of a home. Prior to that, the RCMP had no plan to secure firearms found in searches.

It became apparent that residents had removed firearms from gun safes in basements and moved them to higher ground in their homes, meaning some weapons were now illegally stored and legally warranted seizure for safe keeping.

So apparently finding guns illegally stored in one home searched gives justification to search all homes for illegally stored guns. Just heard of the High River gun grab for the first time today. I found only three articles posted on FR about the RCMP breaking down doors in the evacuated town looking for and confiscating firearms. Shades of New Orleans during the Katrina disaster.

This is what happens when there is no Second Amendment.

Well they do have laws against unlawful search and seizure but they go out the window during a declared disaster.

After reading the article, I think your characterization is off. The article is poorly written. I THINK homeowners in many homes had moved their guns from legal storage in basement safes to open storage on upper floors without safes during the flood. The cops seized the guns that had been moved to the upper story because they were not securely stored. I think the “50 guns” seeming cache was not in one house, but is the number across many houses. But it is hard to tell.

It also isn’t clear if the owners got their weapons back after the flood.

Regarding gun safes, they are both good and bad.

The good part is they lesson the possibility of a gun being stolen or burned in a fire, and keeps them away from small children too young to be taught gun safety.

The bad news is it lets those searching your home know exactly where your firearms are. Same goes for thieves that have the skills to open or just haul off the safes.

The Second Amendment is like any other law. It’s made to be broken. But with it we are better off than the Canadians. Their goons will never have to worry about getting around a 2nd Amendment.

Seems clear to me.

Do a search for “High River gun grab” and read the previous threads. It is pretty clear that the Mounties were on a search and destroy mission for private firearms in this town and for whatever reasons just this town and not others that were hit by the disaster.

I have been thinking about a safe for a long time and now have the cash on hand to buy.

This article gave me something new to consider.

I have yet to see a safe with a gasket on the door. No manufacturer seems to take water or flooding in to account in their design. Most all of them offer moisture protection systems of some kind to prevent rust but no gaskets that I can remember.

Dunno if it’s relevant but the provincial representative for High River at the time was the opposition leader who’d been giving the government of the time plenty of grief.

Cheers,

That may be in part because buildup of moisture in the safe is already a problem which can lead to rusting of firearms.

It would be very difficult to keep a safe water proof. The door would have to have some method of keeping the door extremely tightly pressed against the safe in order to keep that gasket compressed and therefore water tight.

Here’s the theory. It’s the same theory that puts water in a gas tank or moisture in a ammo can.

The inside temp of the gun safe is at house temperature. The gasket is only good at keeping moisture out when the temps inside the safe and outside are about equal.

Once the cold water comes in, the outside temperature drops to water temp. This eventually causes the inside temp to drop, which decreases pressure causing a suction. This suction will draw moisture past the seals. Additionally, the higher the water level, the higher the pressure outside the safe, so the water pressure will actually be pushing water into the safe.

Pelican gun cases inside a gun safe.

According to the report all guns were returned to their owners. Some were destroyed at the owner’s request. Only 2 guns were never claimed.
This is a far cry from what we can expect of gun grabbers in the US. Typically, in the US, guns seized are not returned.

All valid points but they could be overcome.

The resulting safe would be considerably more expensive however than those currently at your local gun store.

Concentric O-rings for example or inflatable gaskets perhaps. Torque down the bolts on the door to 50 ft. lbs and your safe is rated to 100 ft of water. Proprietary case hardened blot heads would be an added layer of protection against thieves.

With Safe Storage laws a possibility there may be a market for such options in safes on the horizon.

***The cops seized the guns that had been moved to the upper story because they were not securely stored.***

Inside a locked house they should be CONSIDERED securely stored or we will end up with a series of silly laws requiring secure guns to be stored in locked cases inside locked vaults inside locked rooms inside locked houses inside locked apartment complexes inside fenced enclosures....

Thousands of guns were illegally seized during Katrina, including some at gunpoint and by force and/or unlawful detention. The Second Amendment is worthless when the people sworn to uphold the Constitution choose to ignore it.

There are a number of gun safes that are rated as water proof to a certain depth. You haven’t looked hard enough.

Our safe has a gasket but it’s designed to expand and seal during a fire. Additionally ours has pre drilled holes in the floor so we could anchor it to the concrete slab in our home.

This is what happens when there is no Second Amendment.

It's also what happens when there IS a second amendment (e.g. New Orleans) The only real deterrent is that the government goons doing the confiscating know if they go too far they're going to be going home in a body bag, and their bosses also fear that too. That's the real reason for gun control - disarm us so that we're helpless to resist tyranny.

And any of the polyannas who post on this forum under the "it can never happen here" assumption are not aware of human nature. Human nature here isn't any different from Pol Pot's Cambodia, Hitler's Germany, Stalin's Russia, etc. There are those who believe it's their destiny to control everyone else, and there are those who support them - look at the number of people supporting Bernie Sanders. Also those who believe that the police won't follow any unconstitutional order just need to look at history at the number of "Blue flu" incidents during recent gun confiscations Oh wait, there weren't any.
