I have an eMachines T3092 running XP, SP3, with an AMD Athlon XP 2600+, 213GHz, 1GB RAM (please HOLD the snarky comments).
My graphics/online video/synch performance is terrible. How can I upgrade my PC for better video performance (preferably a plug-in card).

All depends on two things - what bus the motherboard has (PCI, PCI-E x1/x4/x8/x16, PCI Express? (I won’t mention VESA). Second is what is your budget. Once you know the facts of the first then the second will drive what you buy. Go to www.passmark.com and look at their graphics benchmarks - or www.tomshardware.com. Then go to Amazon and click, buy, boom.
Ah - one big thing - BIG thing - make sure you can get XP drivers for whatever card you buy. Check the company’s website - either going to be an AMD (used to be ATI) chip or NVidia - go to their sites for driver support.
btw - I DOUBT your computer is 213Ghz. :)
I’m too cash strapped to get something better, so I’ve got a piece of crap eMachine, too-and the graphics suck. Does yours us Invidia graphics? If so, my IT manager neighbor who fixes computers on the side tinkered with mine, but could not find a plugin or other fix for it-please let me know if you find one, where and how much-and thanks in advance...
What % of your memory is in use when you have problems? You can find this out by looking at Task Manager.
Why spend ANY money “fixing up” such an OLD machine? Junque it.
I just googled “what video card can my emachines t3092 take” and got a bunch of posts. Looks like it’s an AGP card you need.

Another gating factor is the size of the power supply and available connectors. Also, can the MOBO handle a bigger PS should it be needed?
not a snark but your problem lies in the lack of CPU power and insufficient memory to properly run XP (an obsolete OS). The AMD Athlon XP 2600+ is good for 444 Passmarks which puts it toward the low end of single CPU systems:

You’d be best off putting your money toward a newer (i3 or better) machine, Tigerdirect, Newegg, and others offer pretty good deals if you’re patient.
I don’t think an ‘upgrade’ will do much.
When I was using XP, my online/browser video got so sluggish, I could only have one at a time. My XP machine hard drive crashed.
I replaced that computer with a Win7 desktop, 12 Gb memory. Now, I can run multiple video windows with no problem.

I fear soon we will be forced to go with Win10. I already have problems with some of those ‘mobile friendly’ websites. Their programming is crapola.
Optimize the software. You can’t fix the hardware.
Install Linux Mint 32 bit. You can’t run any modern version of Windows, which means you will get destroyed security-wise.

You have no bios update. You have limited to no resources, which is where Linux shines and windows leaves you to rot. All of the apps you need and plugins are pre-installed on linux mint. Backup your documents to a usb/network drive and burn the iso to cd or usb(likely cd since it’s that old).
To 2harddrive’s point - do NOT spend anything more than $50 on ebay! You can get new machines for $250-$399.
If you are cash-strapped, freepmail me - I’ll see what I have in the closet destined for the dustbin and donate it to your venture - no strings attached. (meaning - don’t call me... hehe)
Your machine is so old, you should be able to get a better one for free. Just ask around. I have had old PC’s sitting in my closet that are better than that.
true - for bigger cards - but if he can only do AGP - my ATI AGPs weren’t power-suckers. I just don’t like emachine slice-your-hand-on-the-cover PCs. Like bigbob said - save a few hundred and just buy new.
Your motherboard will support 2 DIMMS up to 2 gig. We can send you two 1G DIMMS I bet.
Install Lubuntu Linux along side the long dead XP
