When the velocity of revolution falls below the threshold needed to overcome the centripetal speed, they will merge.....................
The Earth and Moon share this same dance. Right now, the Moon is edging away from Earth at about an inch a year, but it will eventually reverse course, and when it gets to the right point, the gravity of Earth will tear the Moon apart, creating a ring, or rings of debris just like the Jovian planets have.....................
