Batteries are so 20th century. The Lumen is a new flashlight that skips the AAs, producing light by harvesting your body heat, and it's looking for funding on Kickstarter. There are no switches, ports, compartments or anything just a machined metal frame, a single bright LED, and a big thumbprint where you need to touch the device.

Better to light one candle than to curse the dark. You would be surprised how ignorant we have grown with our modern lighting to our eyes abilities to process light.

I have a crank flaslight. It works great. I love it.
Pick it up, crank it for 30 sec, and I’m good to go for ~10 minutes..
If I know I’ll need it for longer, I’ll crank it longer. Runs out, I crank it again.

Speaking of “cool” how well would it work on a very cold day? How about an even colder day where you had to wear gloves?
I think it’s very impracticable and is just a novel idea.

I have one of the ones with a crank. After sitting in my glove box for 2 years, it still lit up w/o cranking. Lots of solid products out there these days that negate need for batteries in emergency situations.

Lots of things we use everyday started out as ‘novel’ ideas. Even when I started in wireless communications many moons ago I though cell phones were a novel nitch product.
