In the USA we are a nation of movers and it is expected that when you move to a new place and make your home there that your loyalties will transfer as well.
We took it to the point that it was considered quite rude to ask someone what their name was. The preferred way was ask them what they wanted to be called.
That is not the case in Europe where you are expected to keep your loyalties to your "ancestral land" how ever many generations that may have been in the past.
Both ways of looking at thing have a certain amount of merit to them.

It’s perfectly normal as a European for me to refer to these things. Thank goodness not ALL Americans are as aggressive and rude as Mr. “Einstein” Carraway.
