Homeless emergency declared in Hawaii

(CNN)—Hawaii is a place many go to kick back, relax and enjoy the good life.

But for others, it's a land of struggle.

That's why its governor on Friday signed an emergency proclamation to tackle homelessness in the state, saying the measure will help turn around the lives of young and old.

"Homelessness remains a serious issue in every county throughout the state," Gov. David Ige said in a press release.

Hawaii has an estimated 7,620 homeless people, said the governor's spokeswoman Cindy McMillan, citing a 2015 statewide count. This may not seem like much compared with other places -- to this point California has about 114,000 homeless, New York has more than 80,000 and Texas about 28,500, according to the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness -- but it's all relative to the state's total population.

Charity should be done by individuals, not even the church. I like the example of leaving gleanings in the field for them to go get if they are hungry. I always test situations, sometimes it is worth a few much to make them go away...

That’s what I was thinking, that most homeless are Hawaiian fullblood “bruddahs” whose favorite expression is “Want beef?” when punching out a hapless haole who dared beep his horn when a bruddah cuts him off.

Hawaii has had nearly all liberal governors, like Neil “Yellowfangs” Abercrombie who hauled down the national flag from the state house, leaving the Hawaiian hybrid banner.

So this outcome is hardly surprising. The pineapples need Angela Merkel to send some “refugees” their way, who will do wonders for their beaches.

Thanks for the info. When I was in Hawaii back in the 90’s, the cabbie who drove me from the airport mentioned some homeless people were now living on the beaches. I didn’t see any of that myself, but that’s probably because I was in a prime tourist area (I was staying at the Outrigger, right on Wakiki Beach). It sounds like it’s gotten a LOT worse since I was there.

All I know is, one could do a lot worse than being homeless in Hawaii.

I don't know how the homeless do it in cities like New York. It was bitter, bitter cold today and I was only out for a couple hours.

Several years ago, my husband was a deacon at a church where
we attended at that time. The same woman kept showing up
needing “help”. We fed her and one of the deacons swallowed
hook, line and sinker her sob story. He doled out church
money to her, a considerable amount because money seemed
to be all she was interested in. Husband wasn’t born
yesterday and is sort of conservative. - Well, the last I
heard this same woman is still a travelling sob story
wanting money. Not food, not clothing, just MONEY still
after 14 years of playing the same old song.

A friend of mine told a group of us about passing a guy on the interstate who had a sign out.

He stopped at a place just in view from the guy. He saw him get up and into the trees and pull out in a nice Cadillac.

You think wrong. There are homeless Hawaiian families down on their luck, but most are white, pure panhandlers.

There are precious few full blooded Hawaiians left.

I was in Carmel several years ago and saw a bag lady digging thru the trash. She was relatively well dressed for a bag lady.

Hawaii first choice...Carmel second.

That’s been said since the 1920’s. Didn’t keep ol’ Yellowfangs from passing a law which gives preferential treatment in land disputes to “native Hawaiians” who can prove their Polynesian ancestry. Reverse racism, IMO.

I have a friend whose cousin went crazy in college. Without medicine hes insane and none of his family can handle him since his parents dies. He’s on the streets. When you see a homeless person you’re seeing somebody so bad or so nuts that their own family don’t want them around.I have a cousin who is a criminal. He’s not welcome at my house and nobody else wants to see him either.

What really bothers me is the Hawaiian immersion programs in school. These kids learn Hawaiian before proper English is taught, which makes me wonder how successful they turn out to be as adults. Maybe that gives them skills to be a master chanter (oli), but not much else.
