DALLAS (AP) -- The recent arrest of a 14-year-old Muslim boy whose teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb led to widespread ridicule of school officials and accusations that Islamophobia may have played a part.

It earned Ahmed Mohamed an invitation to the White House, where the Irving teen will attend astronomy night Monday. But it also got him a three-day suspension, which he says the district insisted he serve even after it was clear it was just a clock.

Daniel Kim, director of youth organizing for Padres & Jovenes Unidos, said that while the change in school discipline policies is benefiting all students, there are still disparities in the punishment rates for minorities when compared to whites - especially for blacks.

Could the problem maybe stem in the breakdown of the black family unit, fatherlessness, drugs, welfare?

Naw...that's racessss to even consider.

Hey AP, didja sorta “forget” that this student is a loser...big time. His father is even worse. He should not only have been suspended, but kicked OUT Of THE COUNTRY.

If it is a Bomb and it goes off then you’ll get a 3 day suspension ? If it fails to go off no problem

...

Ripping the guts out of an already working clock isn’t making a clock.

The entire school system in this country needs to get back to basics.

And, the so called clock didn't appear to be so until after proper investigation.

This whole incident was orchestrated by his activist muzzie father in an attempt to gather sympathy over alleged "islamophobia".

Every day when I see my son after school I ask, “did you get in a fight today”. He says “no”, and I ask , “why not?”. “I’ll get suspended” he says. Eventually, he’s going to have to fight. I’m just preparing him mentally for that eventuality.

“whose teacher mistook his homemade clock for a bomb led to widespread ridicule of school officials and accusations that Islamophobia may have played a part.”

Thanks, in no small part, to a grandstanding POTUS who embraced the narrative for political gain.

The disinterest into taking a real look at the history of this kid’s father and the nature of the so-called “clock” by the bulk of the media does not astound me in the slightest. It does, however, lower my already very low opinion of them just a little bit more.

...the district insisted he serve even after it was clear it was just a clock.

Did the other kid have to serve his time "even after it was clear it was just a Poptart"? Did the other kid have to serve his time "even after it was clear it was a crude sketch of a pistol on a piece of paper"?

Incredibly stupid AP writer.

Well, hanging does seem a bit extreme as punishment for school shenanigans.

aquila48 :" What a pile of pathetic propaganda crap!"

Conside the fact that the incident occured in close poximity to 9/11 (Islamoholiday).
When the (fabricated) 'invention' didn't elicit the response he was looking for , he bought it into another class, despite being told to secrete it away.
He brought it into another class , an English class if I remember correctly, and plugged it into an electical outlet so that the alarm would unction.
The alarm went off in English class, not a technology class.

This is a clear case of ALARMIST PROVOCATION , not Islamaphobia 1

The REAL reason they don't want to suspend students is that it will give the school bad stats. Then other (better) students will not want to attend that school. And it will then sink further into the sinkhole of being a violent crummy school, like most of them are.

Most of the problem is unsocialized students from a single "parent" ghetto background. They simply have no concept of how to attend school ON TIME, take their seat without having to walk around the entire classroom hi-fiving everyone, sitting quietly listening to the lesson and taking notes, or studying & doing homework. The students who DO want to learn are prevented from doing so by the thug morons attending the class simply to amuse themselves by disrupting it. If the teacher tries to discipline the thugs, they will be put up on fake charges of "verbal abuse" or some other such libtard nonsense. Thus you have schools where teachers have their hands tied to discipline their classes or keep order, resulting in lower academic achievement, and it's the teacher's fault, of course.

And before the "It's the unions!" crowd chime in with their ignorant and factless remarks, please note that the UNIONS have left their teachers out to dry. They take a good chunk of our salaries but are suddenly unavailable to help teachers falsely accused of "verbal abuse" (in another time, it was called, "Please sit down Tyrone" or "Please open your book to page 423, Jr.") or other fallacious accusations made by students as retaliation for being disciplined in any way.

This is asking the wrong question. The correct question: why the hell are we paying for a government school system where this is even an issue?

You can pour as much perfume as you want on the government school system. It’s still going to stink.

“The entire school system in this country needs to get back to basics.”

Mmmm....that’s a tough one.

Getting back to basics (the 3 R’s, I assume?) will make it hard to dumb down the smart students while at the same time teach them to be submissive and passive.

Is your son being bullied? If so why do you tolerate it? If not why is he going to have to fight?

is it not possible to put all the Sweat Hogs in separate classes and the students that WANT to learn in others???

or is punishing the innocent instead of the guilty not an option?

and what is the rational for not doing so.

thx
