Forty-five people accused of street-level drug dealing were arrested in Plaquemines Parish as result of a yearlong undercover narcotics investigation, authorities said Tuesday (Oct. 13).

Plaquemines Parish Sheriff Lonnie Greco said during a press conference at the sheriff's office in Belle Chasse that an additional nine suspects were still at large.

The investigation, called "Operation Who's Next," targeted 50 suspected dealers who Greco said were selling drugs across the parish, "from Belle Chasse to Boothville." Deputies began arresting suspects Sept. 8. The effort was likely the agency's largest-ever undercover operation, Greco said.

Three high school students, including a 16-year-old, were among those booked on drug charges.

The following drugs were seized:

• 278 grams, or just over half a pound, of marijuana

• 16 grams, or about half an ounce, of heroin

• 228 dosage units of prescription pills

• 31.5 grams of synthetic marijuana

• 19 dosage units of amphetamine

• 1 sheet of synthetic LSD

• 7 grams of crack cocaine

• 4 grams of powder cocaine

• 3 grams of methamphetamine

• 1 gram of counterfeit heroin

• 0.3 grams of counterfeit crack cocaine

Greco noted the resolution of the cases depends on the district attorney's office and criminal court. He then suggested the offenders, especially repeat offenders, should serve time rather than complete a drug diversion program, if convicted.

"Why arrest them if (you're going to) let them off on the street?" Greco said.

Of the 54 total suspects involved in the investigation, the sheriff's office said, 14 are repeat offenders and 12 have prior convictions for drug distribution or possession.

Greco was tight-lipped when asked if his office was pursuing larger distributors compared to the suspected street-level dealers arrested as a part of "Operation Who's Next." He noted, however, that the investigation is "always

Well mom is Sicilian, so my sister is part Sicilian, she married part Polish (took a while to absorb jk :)) and part Naples.

So she does have Sicilian blood, but my dad was from Naples. So maybe a quarter Sicilian.

She wouldn’t have lasted there a month lol

These were all street level dealers. I don’t know if they caught the Big Cheese.

You start at the bottom and work up. The first to squeal gets the deal.

Odd thing is that I see no Hispanic surnames. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Plaquemines Parish is downriver from New Orleans. If you're on your way east from Texas, it would never occur to you to turn right at New Orleans -- nothing down there but water.

The Port of Venice is at the end of the pavement. Half-way down are orange groves with tree ripened fruit. Judge Perez’s family once upon a time ran Plaquemines Parish. Think banana republic like Cuba.

Ah, yes, Judge Leander Perez.

Defender of Huey Long in his impeachment trial.

Segregationist. And all around political boss of Plaquemines Parish. Famously corrupt as only a Louisiana Democrat could be.

Worth a book. And a movie.

And it took a yearlong agency's-largest-ever undercover operation to do it.

We'll have that War on Drugs won any day now. Then we'll empty the ocean with a teaspoon.
