...speaking of the far away shot in post 12, even with modern digital technology, how could they possibly do such a well focused zoom-in to Billy and that other guy from that distant photo?

The original is most likely a large format photo printed from a large negative plate. With a high resolution original, you can easily zoom in and see more good detail.

Tintype is astonishingly fine grained. It was slow, but that looks like a bright sunny day.

I had a vintage 1870s tintype about the size of my thumbnail recently. I looked at it using an eye loupe. The detail was amazing!!
