Charity Tries Inspiring Poor Africans By Giving Them Chelsea Clinton’s Book

A non-profit that distributes e-readers in poor countries is touting the possibly world-changing effect it will achieve by distributing a new book written by Chelsea Clinton.

Worldreader, founded in 2010 by a former Amazon executive, has an admirable goal. Noting that poor children in Africa and Asia have few or no books to read, the organization distributes e-readers in developing countries, in the hopes that it will improve literacy and education.

While the organization’s e-readers contain thousands of books in over three dozen languages, the organization is acting particularly proud that its e-readers will now have the new book “It’s Your World” written by Chelsea Clinton, the privileged daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton. According to Worldreader, Clinton’s words will inspire young African minds and help point the way for them to change the world.

“So many of today’s world challenges have the biggest impact on our youth. And children and young adults feel a real sense of responsibility to do their part,” the organization said in a Tuesday press release. “The reality for many children around the world however, is that they don’t have knowledge on what these challenges are or how to even begin to tackle them. Chelsea Clinton’s book, ‘It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going!’ addresses this problem.”

Clinton currently works as a board member for the Clinton Foundation, her family’s massive multi-billion dollar charity enterprise, and is also closely involved with the Clinton Global Initiative. Her new book, targeted at kids aged 10-14, is intended to inspire children to take action on issues like food insecurity, gender equality, and climate change.

Clinton’s book was one of several hundred that were donated to Worldreader by the publisher Penguin Random House, though it’s receiving the most attention. Other books that were donated earlier, including titles from the Magic School Bus and Berenstain Bears series, may be more appealing to children.

Worldreader has had some links to the Clintons in the past, as founder David Risher is an invited member of the Clinton Global Initiative. At the group’s 2014 meeting, he made a pledge to provide books to 5 million additional people in the next three years.
