That's me.
It's hard to disagree with his outlook.
Yup. All of my internet work except for some very specialized things is done on Linux.
Until Linux stop coming out with these weirdly named versions and produces a coherent way to install that even grandma can do, it will NEVER take over the desktop
It’s a shame because it is clearly a superior operating system.
But it suffers from the same problem I see in the workplace. Programmers (who go home and do online battle in their mom’s basement with the name “DeathWarrior”) believe they are too superior to want to enjoy mass-market appeal.
This smugness over their operating system’s superiority because early in the Unix days and persisted as Apple and Microsoft leapt into multi $trillion dollar powerhouse positions.
I write software for a living- I would RATHER program for Linux, but it is far more difficult than programming for Windows. Even though it is older and better.
We’ve had to fire more than a few of these people for their smug behavior, in the face of reality.
I don't understand why there has to be just one desktop. Seems silly to me.
I don't take a sports car to Lowes. Wrong tool for the job.
Everyone chasing a single, perfect, desktop is chasing shadows.

I’ve got a question for you Linux experts. I want to install Mint along side my current WinXP, Windows 7 and Windows 10 installations on the same PC but keep windows boot manager and not use Mints. Is there a way to do that? I’ve setup another partition just for Linux (70 gBytes) but I don’t want Mint to take over the boot menu.
Thaf would make Eclipse the leading development environment. Microsoft has that market cornered. Xcode and Eclipse are the bastard step child of AD. They work but V Studio is nearly perfect and developers do care.
He mentioned he is using chrome.. and android, where does Linux fit in? (The Unix base doesn’t fit in..)..
Honestly, I don’t care if the rest of the world doesn’t use it... it is still the most secure OS in the world.. (no matter what the Mac fan-boyz say... Mac/Apple is still based on Unix)...
Am I the only person left in America who thinks having data and apps primarily in the cloud in a business environment is a bad idea?
Oh, and Mint, in y opinion, is still the best and easiest to install (and the best for crossover from Windows..).
Chromebook sales this year: 7 million
Desktop and Notebook sales this year: 317 million
Let’s see:
In 1997 the thin client was supposed to kill the PC.
In 2008 the Netbook was supposed to kill the PC.
In 2012 the Tablet was supposed to kill the PC.
Phones, tablets mini and maxi, iPod Touches, Nettops, Chromebooks, appliances, all have their place. For most of us, a Chromebook can no more be our main computer than a Nissan Leaf can be our main car.
The cloud-bias in Windows 10 (and the clear indication that more shoes are nearing terminal velocity) has me looking at Linux for my business machines. I cannot afford to fight with my computer to control my clients’ data, and I certainly can’t afford to have Microsoft “protect” what I am liable for, if disclosed.
Linux is the only “desktop” one owns. The rest are paid subscriptions.
Dependence on Internet and “cloud” connections are single points of failure when required for daily computer use.
I’ll keep my Linux, amateur radio, and Chirp.
People are rushing headlong into exactly what they swore they were going to be freed from by the micro and Linux but there's no slave like a willing slave I guess.
If you're going to be bound hand and foot to something you pay for every month what difference does it make if you get to choose the color and brand of your chains ?
The Internet initially almost all ran on BSD, which was and is a free OS, and all I see Linux having done is to break down the discipline behind BSD to take over the same niche without accomplishing much of anything other being more entertaining for geeks.
People who can't set the time on their VCR are going to move to a geek OS because it's technically better, just like the all flocked to Beta rather than VHS, gotcha.
The market decides, hardware vendors want free rather than paying anything, so, free wins. Bound and gagged and tied to services you pay for so the vendor gets the free and you don't.
For all it's failings, Windows is the most universal standard that's ever existed in the computing community and just like the bad news for fans of machines like Burroughs, too bad if there's something better.
Should we restart the RISC war again (or is that still simmering with guerrilla bands hiding in the mountains and low rent urban enclaves) ?
The real computer revolution died when they stopped shipping BASIC with every machine. We're back to notations instead of languages and pay per use rather than independence.

Our family IT guy enabled me to create a low cost desktop for my Acer Chromebook 15 and Win 10 Toshiba 15.6 laptop to replace my terminal HP Pavilion and 22 in monitor.
I had been considering getting the LG Chrome Desktop or the new Acer Chrome Desktop. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one considering this as Amazon kept upping the price on two year old LG and never discounting the Acer Chrome Desktop.
On his recommendation, for a little over $100, I bought a 22 inch View Sonic with a HDMI connection and a HDMI connecting cable. Now, I have a terrific and clear monitor image with either laptop.
He told me to use an RJ45 connection to either laptop for better security and faster internet linkups. Then, to use a USB wireless keyboard and mouse with either computer.
So for a little more than $100, I have an incredible monitor and a desktop that works with either laptop.
I remember seeing articles back in 1999 spouting about the year of Linux.
Unfortunately too many Linux users are too self-righteous to ever figure out what people need when it comes to an OS to ever get why Linux is not the best solution.
They can’t even agree on one of the 100 distros to even get behind.

The drop in desktop sales has a lot more to do with the speed of technology than an evolution away from local storage. The fact is we are no longer at a point where a 4 year old desktop is an antique, machines can be usable now for 6 to 8 years easy. Gone are the days when a new CPU comes out every couple of years that immediately renders all others obsolete. Heck most people probably couldn’t even tell you what their CPU is anymore. Nobody looks forward to replacing their desktop anymore, it’s now an unpleasant task as the latest and greatest isn’t much of an improvement and reinstalling all your software is a chore.
Meanwhile Linux won’t ever be the desktop king because it holds the same brain space as jazz. Jazz is music for hardcore music nerds, Linux is an OS for hardcore computer nerds. The casual audience has no interest in either.
