A former congressman is taking a slow journey back to Washington DC.

Not to run for office, but to walk there, raising awareness about the treatment of veterans and their families.

Kerry Bentivolio says it is time for lawmakers to do something. The 64-year-old Bentivolio is a veteran of two wars and says the numbers are ridiculous.

About 300,000 veterans likely died while waiting for health care and nearly twice as many are still waiting for treatment. The average Vietnam veteran dies in their 60s, while the average World War II vet is living well into their 80s.

Bentivolio enlisted in the United States Army in November 1968 and served in Vietnam from 1970 to 1971 as an infantry rifleman. After a break in service, he later joined the Army National Guard in Michigan as a reservist and served for more than 20 years. Bentivolio was trained as an MLRS/HIMARS crewmember. He served on the home front during Operation Desert Storm and was deployed to Iraq in 2007 with an Artillery unit as a senior human resources sergeant performing combat convoy missions. He retired as a sergeant first class after a neck injury in 2008. Bentivolio’s awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Better story.

Former Congressman makes pit stop on trek to D.C., buys bike in Norwalk

Bentivolio said “it is not right” that veterans are not viewed as important as new immigrants who are streaming into the United States.

(Bentivolio was also very solid on immigration and border control)

No they don’t. Trump mentions the vets in almost every speech. Who you trying to kid?

So start a thread about it. This thread is about a man who is putting his own blood, sweat and tears into helping vets and not about pimping your candidate.

Vets are a big reason that I pimp my candidate. Trump puts in his own sweat and tears and money to help vets and wants to do more for them. Why, given your greatest chance to do so, do you refuse to help him?

I’m not even going to use the name in threads.

Kerry Bentivolio is a real veteran who served real duty and is doing something he really believes in with virtually no financial support.

It’s a shame on this nation that the men and women who fight for it have to beg and struggle for even half-decent healthcare.

The scum in Washington couldn’t care less about them.

One of the saddest events I've attended in my life is that of a WW-2 father, burying his Vietnam Veteran son. A parent should never have to bury a child. This seems to be occurring with great frequency throughout the land.

According to the Danang Harbor Study (BWN/VVA), Vietnam Veterans are dying 13 years earlier than their non-military contemporaries. 65 years old vs. 78 years old for WW-2 vets.
