Sources close to embattled Speaker of the House John Boehner says the smell of alcohol is far more prevalent on him these days as the continuing government shutdown showcases his failure as a House leader and his obsession with keeping his job above all else in a deepening national crisis.

The Boehner who emerged form a White House meeting Wednesday night appeared stubborn but also confused and out of control after he spent 90 minutes refusing to budge from his marching orders from House conservatives only to face reporters and claim it was President Barack Obama who would not negotiate.

“This is Boehner on his last legs,” a frustrated GOP aide told Capitol Hill Blue after the meeting. “The continuing capitulation, rambling rhetoric and attempts to drown his ineptitude in a bottle are taking their tolls.”(Click For More)

Madsen says he wouldn’t be surprised if Boehner, the 63-year-old son of a tavern owner, was pounding down drinks while trying to please the White House AND hardline House conservatives during the shutdown.

“When he’s under pressure he drinks more, is what I’ve heard,” Madsen divulged.

He adds Boehner’s well-known trait of weeping under stress is also a sign of his boozing.

Says Madsen, “I think it affects his performance as Speaker. I’ve heard people in the White House say ‘We tried to negotiate with him.’ And even some Republicans in the Senate say they can’t work with him because he’s nowhere to be found. He’s off getting sloshed somewhere!”

Former Ohio congressman Bob Ney cranks the criticism up a notch, claiming Boehner “is a party animal who would rather drink than govern.”(Click For More)

He’s also a closet chain-smoker, fond of the Barclay’s brand, rumored to be able to suck half a pack down in a matter of minutes if given a proper recess.

The son of a bar owner, Boehner worked alongside his father mopping the floors at Andy’s Café when he was in elementary school. Perhaps that’s where he first developed his taste for booze, but today, Congressman Boehner resembles a modern day Dean Martin of sorts, even leading a social life the legendary crooner would envy.

He’s made a name for himself with his legendary late-night parties which he first began throwing at the 1996 Republican National Convention. Nicknamed the “Best Little Warehouse” party, Boehner, (along with Bruce Gates, a tax lobbyist with Washington Council Ernst & Young and head of Mr. Boehner’s Freedom Project PAC and prominent lobbyist Henry Gandy) are known for throwing a party at the RNC that runs multiple days, often lasts until dawn and exceeds $100,000.

When Boehner replaced Tom Delay and was elected as Majority Leader back in 2006, disclosure reports filed with the FEC show that Boehner (or his representatives), spent $1,465 at the “classy” liquor store Schneider’s of Capitol Hill on February 3rd, the very next day after he was elected as leader. Clearly a celebration was in order. The bill was paid by Boehner’s slush fund, errr leadership PAC, The Freedom Project.

At the Convention, Boehner gave two awkward, drunken speeches that were embarrassing, somewhat uncomfortable, and confusing at best for those in attendance. The man could not pronounce a name if his life depended on it.(Click For More)

Boehner’s drinking problem – ignored by the mainstream media – received a bit of coverage on a Washington, D.C. blog earlier this year.

“Those who know Boehner best say he does tip more than a few from time to time and some of his drunken binges are poorly-kept secrets on Capitol Hill,” the blog, Capitol Hill Blue noted. “Each day, the email to Capitol Hill Blue is filled with stories about Boehner’s after-hours partying exploits.”

During a trip to Washington, D.C. earlier this year, FITS heard many of these stories … with specific references to the Capitol Hill Club.

Boehner isn’t just a drunk, either, he’s allegedly an “inveterate skirt-chaser who’s had numerous affairs,” according to Down With Tyranny, another Washington, D.C. blog. In fact one lawmaker told us on our recent Washington trip that Boehner – married since 1973 – was forced to narrow his number of regular lobbyist lovers from three down to one when it became evident he was in line to become Speaker in 2010.(Click To read More)

Is it depression? Or is Boehner simply in touch with his emotions? Does he wear his heart on his sleeve, or does he cry on a dime because he has a tender spot for all things American?

While it's impossible to know, some are beginning to speculate that Boehner's penchant for turning on the waterworks might have some connection to his consumption of wine. Liberal MSNBC host Ed Shultz, half-jokingly, called Boehner a "cheap drunk" the other day, Capitol Hill aides of both parties are wondering, and there's even a web page devoted to it.

So is drinking the issue -- and why might a person struggling with drinking be more prone to weeping in public?

What do you wanna bet Biden is reaching over with his left hand giving Crybaby John a soothing pat on the knee, a la State Trooper...

Biden has that same squinty look on his face. That must be his "it's all right, fella" look.

If your Congress critter voted for Boehner to retain his Speaker post, it’s time to ask him why. The man is obviously unstable and has a lot on his conscience, which of course makes him blackmail bait. Obama no doubt knows all about it.
