The Pope praised Serras treatment of Native Americans, saying that he sought to defend the dignity of the native community, to protect it from those who had mistreated and abused it.
Mistreatment and wrongs which today still trouble us, Francis continued, especially because of the hurt which they cause in the lives of many people.
The Pope has planned to meet with Native Americans in Washington after the Mass, a Vatican official told CNNs Delia Gallagher.
But some Native Americans say Serra was no saint.
Were stunned and were in disbelief, said Valentin Lopez, 63, chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band located along Monterey Bay in California.
We believe saints are supposed to be people who followed in the life of Jesus Christ and the words of Jesus Christ. There was no Jesus Christ lifestyle at the missions, Lopez said, who has campaigned against sainthood for Serra.

Father Serra was a good man, those who followed him were a mixed bag. Would the Indians be better off without Serra? No. Their destruction was guaranteed with the Spanish intrusion and later, the Americans were only marginally better.
Regardless of what Lopez and his tribe wanted, Comrade Pope was going to bestow sainthood upon a Hispanic to inspire other undocumented illegal “pilgrams”. Hey, if Comrade Pope can hang out with Cuban murderers, Muslims and church molesters, bestowing sainthood on an “imperfect” priest is no big deal.
My GGM was Cherokee....left all her family...and hid in the woods from the Trail of Tears. Later to be discovered and adopted by a Christian family. They saved her life and her future generations. That includes ME.
That is an interesting story!
This pope has no problem bestowing honors on murderous thugs.
They don’t just pick names at random. Sainthood for Serra has been in the works for decades.
Do you have proof Serra was a murderous thug or is it you like to read false assertions made by left wing academics?
and to think the Pope bypassed the 2 miracle requirement for sainthood! looks like perro is taking his place w/the full endorsement of the Pope. the whole thing is a crock of political sh*te meant to appease large masses of people - this time the Vatican didn’t do it’s homework & native americans don’t seem to have a voice in the many yrs process.
St. Therese of Lisieux? That was a political canonization, too, if go dig deep enough (which I did).
She was used by not only the Carmelite Mother Superior (Therese’s oldest sister) and her felow sister in blood who resided in the same convent esp on advancing the cause for St. Therese’s sainthood but also the iconography of her that has been produced . Believe it or not these were the hustlers. Sad isn’t it?
