...
a black bear came from behind, knocked him over and attacked him.
"Using his hunting knife, the man stabbed the bear, which scared it off. The bear is thought to be injured," the DNR said in a news release. "The DNR was informed about 45 minutes later."

The DNR plans to place a bear trap in the area and is asking the public to be mindful of efforts to capture the bear.

Sir, your face has been ripped off. We advise you to seek medical attention.
Grizzly bear claws are 2” to 4”, while black bear claws are only a little over one inch. Black bears run up to 600 pounds, and grizzly bears up to 800 pounds. Either way, I don’t want to fight one with just a knife. On the other hand, I don’t want to fight one without a knife either.
My vote: (1) Before fighting a bear, practice drawing your knife, so you can do it quickly, smoothly, and ready to fight. (2) Avoid that fight if at all possible! (3) Best option - never bring just a knife to a bear fight; carry at least a .357 in bear country, if you are not going to carry a long gun.
LOL!
The black bear population here in the lower peninsula has grown faster than the DNR are willing to admit. Also the wolf and cougars are way up. Humans are not the top of the food chain here.
Was the knife a Kabar?
DNR tips for being in areas where bears may be:
To avoid surprising bears, travel in small groups and make noise.
If you encounter a bear, stand your ground and then slowly back away.
Do not turn away. Do not show fear, and don’t run. Do not play dead.
Make yourself look bigger and talk to the bear in a stern voice.
If actually attacked, fight back with a backpack, stick or bare hands.
Carry pepper spray, which has been shown to be effective in fending off bear attacks.
Yeah how about having a big bore pistol......idiots.
what about wearing ‘bear bells?’
;-)
Sgt. Jon Wood spoke with the hunter and advised him to seek medical attention.
Yessir right after I get some clean underwear- my mother always said wear clean underwear.
My vote: (1) Before fighting a bear, practice drawing your knife, so you can do it quickly, smoothly, and ready to fight.
Good advice for more than fighting bears
Fred Bear, famous bow hunter, later admitted that he carried a .44 mag under his jacket, just in case.
Man, I joke about going bear hunting with a knife....this guy actually did it. My hat is doffed.
Fixed it.
How many good sea stories have the Kabar prominently featured?
Well, its easy to tell where they've been in use....
hahahahahah!!
