I imagine would be hard pressed to find any town or city that is not sitting on some previous cultures settlement or burial ground.

If previous occupants found the site suitable for habitation- reason states that so would following occupants

I agree. What i never understood is how the further archaeologists dig down in an area the earlier the civilizations they find.

What happens? those people and their homes and business just shrunk into the ground? confuses me.
