Woman Left “Close to Death,” Forced to Have Stomach Removed After Drinking Shot (Liquid Nitrogen)

A wine bar and bistro is being fined over 100,000 pounds for causing a woman severe injuries.

According to the BBC, Gaby Scanlon was celebrating her 18th birthday at Oscar’s Wine Bar & Bistro in 2012.

During the celebration, a bartender gave Scanlon a Nitro-Jagermeister, which contains liquid nitrogen.

“I turned to the man and asked if it was okay to drink. He said, ‘Yes,” Scanlon testified in court. “Smoke was coming from my nose and mouth. Straight away, I knew something was not right. My stomach expanded.”

She was immediately rushed to the hospital, where doctors say she was close to death.

In fact, surgeons had to entirely remove her stomach and connect her esophagus to her intestines.

Experts say that the liquid nitrogen must completely evaporate before the drink is safe.

Health officials say they told the owners of the bar that they had concerns about the drink months before it was ever served to Scanlon. They say they even sent a letter with guidelines on how to properly serve a drink with liquid nitrogen so no one would get hurt.

The BBC says the bar pleaded guilty to one count of failing in the duty of an employer to ensure the safety of persons not in its employment.

This is a true stupidity contest, server, drinker, bureaucracy.

I guess a drink with ice cubes would have been out of the question.

This is the second time for this problem in London, I believe. There was an incident a year or two ago.

At least we know now that America isn’t the only country where stupidity is the national pastime.

I’ve quaffed flaming shots, but liquid nitrogen? Who came up with, and O.K.’d that maneuver?

If it must completely evaporate before the drink is safe .... what the heck is the purpose for the liquid nitrogen? A Darwin ambush for challenged people?

Culinary use of liquid nitrogen[edit]

The culinary use of liquid nitrogen is mentioned in an 1890 recipe book titled Fancy Ices authored by Mrs. Agnes Marshall,[13] but has been employed in more recent times by restaurants in the preparation of frozen desserts, such as ice cream, which can be created within moments at the table because of the speed at which it cools food.[13] The rapidity of chilling also leads to the formation of smaller ice crystals, which provides the dessert with a smoother texture.[13] The technique is employed by chef Heston Blumenthal who has used it at his restaurant, The Fat Duck to create frozen dishes such as egg and bacon ice cream.[13][14] Liquid nitrogen has also become popular in the preparation of cocktails because it can be used to quickly chill glasses or freeze ingredients.[15] It is also added to drinks to create a smoky effect, which occurs as tiny droplets of the liquid nitrogen come into contact with the surrounding air, condensing the vapour that is naturally present.[15]

To remove her stomach seems like an over-reaction. Liquid nitrogen quickly turns into a inert harmless gas (80% of the atmosphere) and I doubt that in a shot there could be very much. Yes it could burn but burns can heal on their own.

Liquid nitrogen is commonly used in medical practice to destroy tissues (such as warts or premalignant skin lesions). A small amount is VERY efficient at killing tissue
quite rapidly. I have no problem believing this woman suffered severe injury
