Are there enough shows about bearded European-y people brandishing swords and shields and shouting at each other? Not according to BBC America, which will stake a claim in the medieval drama genre with The Last Kingdom, debuting Saturday, October 10 at 10pm. And to prove it, BBC America released the first full-length trailer for the series.
Adapted from Bernard Cornwell's novels The Saxon Stories, The Last Kingdom chronicles the rise of young Saxon warrior Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) and the birth of England in the 9th century in Northumbria. And if you're a fan of History's Vikings, get ready for some historical crossover as many names of people and places will sound awfully familiar.

You know, I realized years ago that most BBC shows put American TV to shame. They take time to develop characters and the biggest thing I noticed.....so many of their actors/actresses are not overly good looking but their acting overrides that! You never see that in this country
I watched BBC’s Copper on Netflix. I liked it a lot.
In America, women now play the lead roles in shows that men used to play. About 90% of all shows now have some brash woman in command of everyone.
Their series are typically only 5 to 12 episodes per year.
That does give them more development time, but it is difficult to remember what happened from one season/year to the next. HBO and the premium channels are using a similar formula in their series. Cable channels are also moving more in that direction.
A half-century ago, these were called mini-series.
I’m reading Bernard Cornwell’s historical novels now and have finished The Last Kingdom. Now I’m reading his trilogy of King Arthur. If you like historical fiction you will love Cornwell’s novels. He also did a series of novels on the Civil War that is a must read. I will be dying to see the movie of The Last Kingdom.
I’ve been watching Foyle’s War on Netflix. Set in Britain in the early 40s, it’s a masterpiece of writing, acting and photography. The last two seasons are on Acorn t.v. and I haven’t seen those yet. Nothing I’ve seen on American t.v. comes close to the quality of this show. Along with Morse and Lewis, the Brits certainly know how to produce a story.
Can’t wait for this to start. I’m a huge Bernard Cornwell fan. I’ve read all the books in all his series several times. I put Bernard Cornwell in the same category as Patrick O’Brien. That’s very high praise from me!
Cornwell’ telling of the Arthurian legend is by far the best I’ve ever read.
Acting is in their blood. I watch much more British produced TV than American. It’s not even close.
I absolutely loved Foyle’s War. I was a bit disappointed in the later seasons as they seemed to have adopted more of a PC tone.
Well, the liberals did take over after the war. After fighting so hard for their country, they turned it into something not resembling that which they’d thought for.
I’ve watched all those shows except Shetland. I lost interest in Blacklist because Red just pulled to many rabbits out of a hat too easily, and the female lead is annoying. The one with Pee Wee Herman was funny, though.
