Leslie Moonves and CBS Staff Heard Dismissing Robert Redford's Dan Rather Movie as "Half-Truth
THR ^ | 9/16/2015 | Matthew Beloni

Posted on 09/16/2015 10:12:20 AM PDT by Signalman

Before its acclaimed premiere at TIFF, 'Truth' — about the scandal that ended the anchor's CBS News career — was screened for a special viewer: CBS president and CEO Moonves, who was not impressed.

Truth, director James Vanderbilt's drama about the "Memogate" scandal that ended Dan Rather's CBS News career, was touted as a world premiere at Toronto. Rather himself turned up at the event to praise the film's accuracy and its (very sympathetic) portrayal of him.

But it turns out the movie was shown months earlier to a special viewer: CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves. And the reaction was less than effusive.

CBS mostly comes across as the villain in Truth, with news chief Andy Heyward appearing to fire Rather (Robert Redford) and 60 Minutes producer Mary Mapes (Cate Blanchett) to appease the George W. Bush White House and protect CBS' bottom line in the wake of questions regarding documents behind a 2004 story on Bush's military service. The film downplays Rather's role in the reporting that led to the scandal and suggests that the attacks on the 60 Minutes II report were politically motivated.

A source close to the film says Moonves wasn't a fan of Truth, but, ever the gentleman, he didn't ask producers for major changes, and a CBS source says the network isn't planning to publicly lash out at Sony Pictures Classics' Oct. 16 release (any challenge from those depicted would only provide more publicity for the film, of course).

Still, Moonves and staff were heard at CBS headquarters dismissing the movie as "half truth." CBS declined to comment.

I put this film in the same category as that piece of trash film about Valerie Plame starring that English Blonde Naomi Watts and that idiot Sean Penn. Utter fantasy.

I think 37 people might actually pay to see that movie, that would consist of DUers who don’t live in their parents basement.

Rather got sucked into a cheap flim-flam that wouldn’t have fooled a cub reporter at a small town weekly paper. Even if he had suspected the validity of the documents he believed he had the power to turn water to wine. Rather was fired because he is a fool.

That movie, called Fair Game was released more than five years ago. It has grossed $9.5 million to date.

Goofy Redford couldn’t even get the Lincoln assassination right.

Well, the Wikipedia article on the movie said it did a total box office of $24 million and cost $22 million to make.

The $9.5 million figure came from BoxOfficeMojo.com.

I don’t know which one is right.

I think it’s fair to assume that it did not make a lot of money for its backers. I think it’s also fair to assume that they didn’t care.

Fake, but accurate.

What idiot invested money in this? Why would anyone pay to see this? Not even a buck and a half for Redbox . . .

Yes....I think you’re right. The value was political in preparation for Bronco Bama’s re-election.

I can’t think of a more disgusting episode in put up false intrigue and outright outrageous claims of “harm” than by these two. Valerie and that dirtbag Joe (IIRC) Plame. NOC my ass.

Uh huh.

Every Hollywood leftie wants to recreate the societal impact of “The China Syndrome”, but in their own image.

Truth or facts don’t matter. In fact they are to liberals as Kryptonite is to Superman.

What an ironic place to be discussing Dan Rather’s hurt feelings.

Buckhead stripped away the privileged sanctimony practised by Dan and crowd. Dan was had, and now Robert has been had, and neither one of them knows that they are standing as naked fools by insisting on believing a lie that everyone else can see.
