Interesting, I’m still running Win7 and do not allow automatic updates but following the article’s info I just checked and the CEIP was turned on. Since I didn’t add it and didn’t authorize it, there may actually be something to this. Of course, I’m in the 60+, electronics challenged generation so it could just be me!

I have a new laptop (last November) that runs Win 8.1. As far as I know, I have not “opted in”. I checked the settings for CEIP & guess what? I was checked as ‘participating’. As of 5 minutes ago, that setting has been changed. Thanks for the article.

Whats opt-in anymore? I set for manual updates only to have MS change it back to automatic and push the updates at the most inopportune time.

I thought if you set it for manual updates, it would not install any without your approval first. I was wrong; when I check the privacy settings info, I found this:
Choice and control
Update Services are turned on if you choose one of the following settings: (a) install updates automatically; (b) download updates but let me choose whether to install them; or (c) check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them. The Windows Update service is turned on and set to "Install updates automatically" when you choose the express settings during Windows setup.
If you turn on the Update Services, regardless of which setting you have chosen, required updates to some components of the service will be downloaded and installed automatically without further notice to you. If you would prefer not to receive required updates, turn off the Update Services.
You can also choose whether to check for or automatically install Important and Recommended updates for your computer or Important updates only. Optional updates are never installed automatically.
Grrr...

Umm, if the “North American Union” includes Central & South America, wouldn’t they just call it the “American Union”???

After all of these years, they’re still going after the soft targets: their customers. I’ve used Unix variants since the mid-’90s and only ran Windows in virtual machines on a few occasions. There’s been no need for Windows for some time. Some of the Linux distributions are far easier and faster to download, install and use with far less wasted time.

I suggest everyone with a new or upgraded installation of 8.1 recheck all their privacy settings. Upgrading from 8 turned my webcam from "off" to "on."
