A Metairie man with "WHO DAT" tattooed across his forehead was sentenced to six months in jail this week after he spat at a New Orleans judge during his arraignment tied to a charge of grabbing a deputy's groin.
Michael Edwards, 29, of 2818 Tugie Drive, who already faces a municipal charge tied to spitting on a deputy, missed Criminal District Court Judge Robin Pittman when he spat her on Wednesday. But his spit was found on the wood trim at her bench, court records show. For that, she held him in contempt and sentenced him to the maximum punishment of six months.
Pittman also ordered the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office to bind his mouth for his next court appearance, which was Friday. The Sheriff's Office did not cover his mouth, but deputies delivered him to court for his arraignment with a net over his head, court records show.
He pleaded not guilty to a charge of sexual battery, but after allegedly causing another outburst in Pittman's court, leading deputies to remove him from the room by force. He threatened the judge and her family, and then as he was hauled out of the courtroom, he grabbed a microphone in an attempt to use it as a weapon, court records show.
Pittman ordered a mental health evaluation Friday. Edward's is due back in her court Oct. 22.
