It is time for Major League Baseball umpires to stop calling balls and strikes
Business Insider ^ | September 6, 2015 | Cork Gaines

Having umpires call balls and strikes is one of the most fundamental aspects of both the game of baseball and the profession of Major League Baseball umpires. But as we get better at recognizing what is really a strike it is becoming painfully obvious that it is time for the umps to give up the responsibility.

It’s Ok for Curt Gowdy to say, “Roberto Clemente has two balls on him.” But he can’t say “I think he hurt his balls on that play Tony, don’t you. He’s holding them, he must’ve hurt them by god.”

The NBA decided a long time ago to adopt the city games. I’m surprised scoring isn’t based on style points awarded by a panel of judges.

The author is an idiot.

Umpires don't even try to call balls and strikes in accordance with the published rules. They go with, usually, their OWN strike zone that's close to, but different than published rules.

That's why you rarely see the high strike in the National league which is built on pitching and pitches hitting.

During a playoff game the strike zone is known, historically, to lower 2-3 inches.

Of course in the Ame3rican league anything below mid-thigh is considered a ball.

All of the players, coaches and Umps know these unwritten rules and genuinely enjoy the passions and arguments it creates.

The ONLY thing they complain about is when a particular ump is NOT CONSISTENT.

Don't call that slider toward the back foot a strike on one pitch, and then a ball on the next.

Next let’s check out the NBA referees. Why do they never call traveling in the NBA?? Players can run and take 3 steps without dribbling the ball and the refs still don’t call traveling.

I do not like this idea of trying to have technology take out the human aspect of sports, I hate replay in football because now after every big play, it seems you have to wait five minutes to find out if it’s going to stand or not, I’d rather go back to the way it was and take my chances, besides, bad calls tend to even themselves out in the long run.

Yeah. He was getting up there in those days. I thought it was strange that, the older he got, the funnier he got. IMHO.

You see the catcher does not have the ball, but blocked the plate?

Safe.

I don’t much like watching baseball. Golf either. Played both, liked it. But I hate watching it.

That said, I think putting technology into the game, (other than clocking the heat) is just wrong somehow.

Yelling at the ump is part of the game.

You make some excellent points. But why should the strike zone be different in the leagues and change once again during the playoffs? Rules are rules and should be consistent through the game. You are simply stating the human factor which is always part of the game. This is what is, not what ought to be. Just my 3 1/2 cents.
