Four shot during skirmish at Columbia VFW Post
The Columbia Daily Tribune ^ | Sunday, September 6, 2015 | Jodie Jackson Jr

A fight inside VFW Post 280 early Saturday morning stopped a hip-hop album release party and ended with four people shot during a flurry of gunfire. One woman who was shot required emergency surgery, Columbia police spokeswoman Bryana Larimer said in a news release.

“Everybody was trying to figure out where to go to hide. It was chaotic,” said Kim Wischmeyer, quartermaster and canteen manager for the VFW Post at 1509 Ashley St. The post was back to business as usual for its Saturday breakfast and a Saturday evening dance. Wischmeyer said three glass doors were replaced and the building sustained additional damage from gunfire. He and the staff cleaned up several areas that were bloodied during the shooting.

Police responded to the VFW Post at about 12:52 a.m. Saturday. Officers said one man and three women suffered apparent gunshot wounds.

Police were looking for one to three black men suspected in the shooting, Larimer said.

Wischmeyer said a fight broke out between two men during a rap album release party organized by a promoter who paid $500 to rent the building. Wischmeyer and other VFW staff were tending bar for the party that started about 10 p.m. Friday.

This is kinda funny. I saw “four shot during skirmish at VFW Post” and thought, “Wow. That doesn’t sound like any VFW post I’ve ever been to.

Then, I read the first line and saw “rap release party”.

There is no better illustration of the difference between the Two Americas (the law-abiding one full of people who serve and the lawless one full of useless eaters) than this.

You are absolutely correct. The comments from the VFW post manager in the article are pretty good, too.

guess they thought they could NOT refuse or be charged with discrimination- easy to fix, depending on event -need a minimum of
4 police officers- cleanup fees - etc.

My VFW post is always looking to rent out- I will let them know
rap parties are a bad idea- lol

You know how it is, they gave these folks a chance, they effed it up and that was the end of the dance.

Master at arms put an end to it

Ok. Excellent case in point.
If any venue or business bans activities involving Rap music, is this discrimination against black PEOPLE?
Or is it simply a refusal to endorse / participate in violent, immoral ACTIVITY?
Same principle needs to apply to gay weddings, pride parades, etc.
Sounds like the people in charge of this VFW hall were afraid of being called racist, if they refused Rap.
We need to stop wimping out. We absolutely do have the right to “discriminate” —meaning, make distinctions—between right and wrong behavior.
Last Sunday I attended a black church with friends. The choir rocked the rafters —full gospel, glory and praise for God. At no time did I feel unsafe.
The choir director commented that he was a former rapper. Said he’d traded in his “street cred” for eternal life.

I’ve been to a couple of Quinceanera receptions at our local VFW hall. (That’s a 15th birthday observance for Mexican girls.) No alcohol, therefore no shooting.

You racist homophobes at the American Legion WILL rent your hall to the local Black National Socialist Man-Boy Love Association chapter, OR ELSE.

If I were to hazard a guess the hall rental fee became too much of an enticement and overcame better judgment at the VFW hall. Nothing good EVER comes from rap.

I bet they won’t do that again.
