'I Am Francis. And I Am Still Alive…'
Emirates 24/7 ^ | Saturday, August 22, 2015 | Majorie van Leijen

Posted on 08/23/2015 7:32:46 PM PDT by nickcarraway

How an 11-month-old pup - left for dead in Fujairah - survived

As told by Francis himself.

“My name is Francis, a former happy pup. But after a recent event I have to find my life back. Let me tell you what happened…

I was born in the UAE, a beautiful place. A bit hot though, but it could be worse.

I am 11-months-old so don’t know much about the life, but I guess it hasn't been easy.

It’s really hot outside and I am not really finding food or water. I think I have to learn to find that myself, seems to be an issue of not being a grown-up dog yet.

I have been so excited about being an adult soon: taking care of all the stuff alone...and maybe one day I find a lovely friend who can run around with me.

Everything is different now. I clearly remember that one day when everything in my life changed. I don't even know why…

There was this person; he called me to come to him. I didn’t know this human, but usually they feed me, so I followed his call.

What happened next is a bit of a blur. He kicked me, it was very painful. I don’t know what I did, but I guess I did something wrong. If I could only remember what it was.

I am not sure what happened after this kick, but there was a terrible pain, I cried as loud as I could, but the human did not stop. As I woke up I was lying in the sun, at some place I don't even know.

It was hot. Was it still the same day? Who can give me water? I cannot move my legs anymore. How? Everything was fine before.

I cannot stand up, my back is hurting, am I allowed to cry?

Such a pain, everywhere down my spine and legs, and I am so thirsty.

Why is no-one is coming? Why is no-one helping me? Is this my last day? What have I done?

I stopped counting the days. I am still here in the sun. I wait till the night comes. It’s not much cooler, but at least there is no sun. Many people have passed me, and no-one stopped. Do they think I am dead? Why no one is taking a closer look?

Hey, I am still alive!”

Francis was found after lying on the street for 14 days. He was badly abused, and suffered several injuries; rectum abuse, heat stroke, crushed spine, crushed testicles, broken leg, and open wounds and deep gashes all over his body.

Due to his injuries he is now paraplegic and incontinent... but he survived.

The story was sent to Emirates 24|7 by UAE Pet Awareness, an organisation that aims to raise awareness about animal abuse and dumping in the UAE.

“The amount of animals abused and dumped is worrying high right now and Francis has been abused in a matchless and unlimited way.

“We have to make people aware that culprits of cases like these live in the same communities as we do.

“Furthermore, many people passed this heavily injured dog, but simply did not help him! This is a clear sign of ignorance of an entire community and should worry us equally,” said Evelyn, a representative of the organsiation.

UAE Pet Awareness would like to share the following message:

- You do not need to like an animal, but if you see one suffering, you could at least call for help.

- You do not need to like an animal, but there is no need to harm it.

- You do not need to own a pet if your circumstances do not allow it, but you can still volunteer and be surrounded by loads of abandoned animals daily.

He Does. Gypsy lead me to a greater understanding of faith, gratitude, happiness, & joy than I ever learned in church, life, or from another person. In many ways, too, so has Mia.

I don’t believe in the theory that dogs evolved from wolves. I believe they are a separate species Created for the purpose of companionship by God.

She’s very serious. Lina is a serious dog. They can be silly & playful, but some of them, when it comes down to it, they’re pretty serious. They think.

There was an article published not long ago proving that dogs are not wolves.

They both split off from a common ancestor, eons ago and are separate beings.

Personally, I think God created wolves *and* He created dogs.

It certainly would not have been a hardship for Him to do so, considering that “whole universe” thing.

I know what you mean.

Odin has always been a serious dog who took up his duties to protect me at the tender age of 6 weeks.

Seven is also is extremely protective but she’s much sillier.

Whereas she was, it’s as if Odin was never really a puppy, if that makes sense.

I understand what you mean- not ‘’profiting’’ from a talent (?) but still- if it would help a dog… .

Well, hopefully. They have the most interesting personalities. And they’re beautiful, of course. This is the one breed that long coat/ feathered or short, I like them both. Lina has a very similar temperament to a Saluki- *very* easily butthurt & real slow to get over it (most of the time, we have no idea what she has her feelings hurt over this time)- not like an Eskie at all. You just have to pet on her & wheedle a lot when she gets like that lol So I’m somewhat trained. Maybe.

 I’ve learned to live with it.

lol Our possums are picky. The nights when we don’t have any scraps they get a biscuit or dog food. Sometimes they pass & this isn’t the cheap stuff. Skunks are the ones you have to be careful with. They get real tame & punctual…& then there’s the rabies thing.

Oh hell no, not ants. lol but pill bugs, I will wait for them to move before I sweep (so will DH).

HA You know that dog people can go on for hours & hours. (Poor Nick. And Joe. We’ve just played hell with their thread. SORRY, Gentlemen!!)

Our dogs are never alone. It’s a good thing we don’t look alike or people would talk. It’s either DH OR me or all of us.

Ugh. There was a similar situation (Salukis, I think) up by Dallas some years back. Hoarders suck.

That’s true. That was the first thing I learned about sighthounds. We are paranoid about our dogs getting out, anyway.

That’s the whole point.

I make the stuff then give it dog rescues who sell it and the money goes to dogs.

So, yeah, it all helps the dogs.

Sighthounds are super-sensitive dogs.

Rule number one is no harsh treatment, no yelling, no hitting, no jerking, nothing.

Much like Dobes, they intuit things very rapidly so a quiet ‘bad dog’ is just as devastating to them as all the screaming in the world.

They change you.

They make you more mellow, patient and gentle.

It takes a while to fathom the mind of a “primitive breed” but once you do, it’s a wondrous place to be.

Much less complicated than other, “newer” breeds.

:)

Well, I am, too. You could marvel at my dogs making complete beasts of themselves when we met up walking the dogs. Then again, the ‘’thumpers’’ (hip hop) wouldn’t stand a chance.

You are *really* lucky they’re not in your house, Sal (hmmm maybe you’re on to something) HATE the damned ants.

Our skunks are too rabies-prone to mess with, here.

The idiot up the hill fed hordes of stray cats that he “loved” and next thing we knew, we had a rabies epidemic.

Coons and skunks turning up rabid, frequently, every year for about a decade.

I ended up getting shots because of that.

A coon mom and her babies were in the yard and the dogs got near them, and without thinking of myself, I grabbed their wet, slobbery muzzles to inspect them for bites.

So off to get the shots, I went.

All 3 coons were rabid.

Shortly after that, the SPCA finally went to the cat hoarder/feeder and gave him the choice of vaccinating or surrendering them.

He said it was “unnatural” for them to be vaxed or confined so off they went.

And after a year of no bags of cat food left out every day, the rabies died down but I’m still paranoid.

Those shots mess you up.

My ants are nice ants.

And I love pill bugs, too.

[oh no, and *spiders*]

:D

I agree. How a Volpino ‘’evolved’’ from a wolf is ridiculous. But I don’t really believe in evolution in any species. Succession perhaps, but different genii or whatever.

It does. Our first Eskie (who was about 5 when we got her) wasn’t really a puppy. Lina has her moments, but she’s always been kind of serious.

They’re used to me rambling on, after all these years. LOL

I have fences within fences within fences.

Gates with wicked locks.

The outside world never touches the inside world, and vice versa.

Prior to my first Ibizan, I had no fence at all.

The Dobes somehow knew precisely where the property line was and never crossed it.

A week of life with Minny...whew.

The first fence went up, *fast*.

The ants used to come in but we made a covenant, of sorts.

I feed them out there and they don’t come in here.

Plus, they’re best weathermen in the business.

*Never* wrong about rain.

:)

Nope.

They dogs grab it and hold until the hunter comes to dispatch it.

They actually have very gentle mouths, like a good bird dog.

They deliver live, unharmed rabbits right to the hunters’ hands.

Craziest thing you’ve ever seen.

Mine have handed me live mice and birds, all of which I took back outside and let go

I have done my homework & I’m still looking. If it looks like we’re actually going to get one, I will read Only Angels, too. (not that I need them to be angels)

lol Well, yelling happens somewhat often right now (after much barking/ howling), but they don’t care. (threats to call the cops are pointless, too. I should probably intervene sooner), but we’ve never been martial. I dumped pdta trainer once because I thought she was too rough with Gypsy. The very absolute last resort here is the spray bottle. It only needs to make an appearance.

lol We don’t use the b-a-d word here- at least not in context with the dogs. The rescues might have known, but maybe because Gypsy (& Lina) didn’t have any reaction, they don’t react to it either. We used to not need a stern no, but with 8 dogs, that eventually changed. Calmer, low pitched no’s work 100% better.
We’ve really been very lucky with our dogs- the ones we’ve raised from puppies. After the crazy started settling down, they’ve been really good girls without much guidance. (petty thievery & extortion make fine entertainment, not to mention photo ops & needed breaks in the day)

The calmness is one of the biggest attractions to sighthounds. I love Eskies so much, but they are so Type A (& I am). More than one is a circus. DH has an identical personality to a sighthound, so it could only be a good thing.

How awful!

We are, periodically, overrun with cats. (I haven’t actually seen skunks for awhile, but smelled one a few, lately). Raccoons irritate the crap out of me.

We use Shake Away around our backyard fence. I’m not sure if it works or we’ve been lucky. Nobody (well, not 4 legged somebodies) goes in the ‘’yard’’ part of the yard, unattended or after dark.

brrr Hate spiders. (except for the nosey blue eyed ones that hop. Still, I don’t want them on me).

How funny. We have an 8 foot cedar picket & a 3 foot ‘’interior’’ fence, 3 feet & 15 feet from the streets on either side. The front of our house that would be exposed has a 6 foot brick wall around a courtyard with a padlocked iron gate (somebody- I forget who, left the gate standing open one time too many). Now, I wonder how many other people do this, too.

lol It’s amazing what can happen when we’re motivated ;-)

You have me thinking about the wisdom of this. Last year was bad, but we had a pretty bad drought. This year has been sporadic.

We started this year awful with fleas (a lot of rain), but knocking on wood now…skeeters have slacked off, too. At least better.

I refer to my yard as The Labyrinth.

I, too, have had issues with people leaving open gates.

One guy was so habitual, I had to get serious about it.

He laughed my dire threat/promise off but hubby just looked at him and said “She IS serious”.

So, now, there are separate yard for humans and dogs and never the twain shall meet.
