A Santa Clara County bomb squad has detonated World War II-era grenades and mortars found this afternoon in a home in Palo Alto, police said Thursday evening. Coast Guard Seizes 6 Tons of Cocaine Valued at $181M

The grenades and mortars were found this afternoon by a resident cleaning a home in the 1900 block of Webster Street, police said in a Tweet posted at 4:49 p.m.

The resident moved the grenades to the driveway of the home before police arrived on scene.

The home where the grenades were found and homes on either side were evacuated and other residents in the area were asked to shelter in place.

Police said the bomb squad determined one of the grenades was live. They were buried and detonated around 7:15 p.m., according to posts on Twitter by police.

And people ask why the police need military equipment.

As long as they weren’t German grenades, I don’t see the problem...

All that firepower and drugs, and it’s not even Cindo de Mayo party time! ;-)

“and mortars”? Baseplate and tube, or the rounds to drop down the pipe or dummy rounds? Funny no more mention of that.

What does this have to do with the CG seizure?

So 1 live grenade found justifies military equipment across the nation?

“They were buried and detonated around 7:15 p.m”

Good. Robbed Obama the chance of shipping them to ISIS.

Tough luck, Obama!

If these were live and indeed that old, there may also be concerns of the stability of the explosives.

TNT and composition B does not get more sensitive with age as does dynamite. The fuzes and igniters probably become inert.

I would have set the peckers off myself.

While not as sensitive as dynamite, Composition B becomes more sensitive and unstable with age. Back around the Forrestal fire, the stocks of Mark 82’s and Mark 83’s had run out, so some old WWII era bombs were loaded onto the carrier. The former used Composition H6, the latter used Composition B. The captain was concerned about the stability of the old bombs, so he had them stored on the flight deck rather than the magazine. It was a good decision, since if the old bombs cooked off below the flight deck, the Forrestal would have sunk.

You chased me back into my old Explosives and Demolitions book. Yep, you are right about that. I think WWII grenades were TNT rather than Composition B. The 1972 E&D book lists grenades as being charged with TNT.

C4 was my hands down drop dead favorite.

No, the firepower that drug cartels now have justifies military equipment. Even common street thugs have weapons that are a far cry from what police once encountered. Perhaps you remember the street fight in Los Angeles a few years ago where the cops were outgunned. It wasn’t pretty.

Long gone are the days when a cop could approach a situation with just a badge and a handgun. Drug houses are full of high power guns and more.

One incident has been used as justification for so much. It’s simply amazing.

Gotta have those toys
