DETROIT, MI - A report in the Financial Times says cyber security researchers were able to hack into and gain control of a Tesla Model S and shut the vehicle down at a low speed.
The electric car was going about five miles an hour when Marc Rogers, principal security researcher at Cloudfare, and Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer at Lookout, shut the car down, causing all of its screens to go black and the handbrake to come on.

The automakers don’t seem to have a clue about computer security.

The only thing that can shut down my Mercury Marquis is a Air to Surface Missile.

Just imagine what the antivirus / anti-malware software subscription is going to cost...

They were unable to hack the Model S over the air.
They had to get physical access to the car and hack through an ethernet cable.
And they could control the motor and reduction gear only at 5 mph and lower.
A patch has already been issued and downloaded by many/most Model S owners.
No need to visit the dealership to have software downloaded like Fiat Chrysler.

My old jeep is usually crippled by no budget for parts which are sometimes as defective out of the box as what needs replacing.

No kidding.
But, they just gotta have all the wifi and Bluetooth in their cars. Whatever happened to just plain old driving with a nice Bach CD playing in the dash?

A head on with a 1961 Chrysler Imperial might do the trick as well.

Is the 3D printables market starting to address these issues?

30,000 vehicle crash deaths per year in the US and folks are wetting the bed over “hacking” LOL.

So much of the replacement supply has gone to China manufacturers where quality control is spotty. I’ve seen both excellent and crappy stuff from there.

If it says Solex, I will pass. Learned the hard way.
Replacement 1 barrel lasted barely a year. I will blame ethanol laced fuel partly.
There is a progressive Weber kit for A $300 or so. Hope to have next Friday budget allowing. I can get rid of that bloated wet bath oil filter.
